Overview



This is an exciting opportunity for a talented and motivated Lecturer to join the vibrant and supportive team in the School of Clinical Dentistry, within the Faculty of Health at the University of Sheffield.



You will contribute to the delivery and enhancement of our undergraduate programmes, particularly the flagship Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) and Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy BSc, while also playing a key role in high-quality postgraduate research (PGR) supervision and student support. Teaching areas of interest include histology, physiology, cancer biology, immunology, and relevant laboratory techniques.



We are particularly interested in candidates whose research interest or expertise lies in histology, cancer biology, and molecular cell biology, especially those working on the mechanisms underlying non-communicable diseases including cancer. This post offers the opportunity to establish and/or lead your own research group, contribute to interdisciplinary projects, and deliver REF 4*-level outputs and impact. You will also supervise PhD students and early career researchers, and develop externally funded research and innovation programmes that align with national and international priorities.

Main duties and responsibilities






EDUCATION


Contribute to the organisation and delivery of teaching of fundamental oral and dental sciences to undergraduate and postgraduate students in the School of Clinical Dentistry. Areas of particular teaching expertise may include: histology (including normal tissue and diseases), physiology, cancer biology, immunology, molecular biology. Teaching is largely but not exclusively within the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) and Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy BSc programmes. Prepare and implement student assessments, both formative and summative. Supervise undergraduate research projects. Contribute to PGR supervision. Undertake academic duties as required. Contribute to the process of undergraduate and postgraduate student recruitment and selection. Maintain and enhance the quality of student's experience through excellence in teaching and learning. Contribute to programme development and design and support School initiatives. Participate in University and Faculty wide initiatives to enhance teaching and staff development.



RESEARCH and INNOVATION


Develop an interdisciplinary and collaborative research programme aligned with the strategic priorities of the School and wider University. Develop your trajectory as an academic researcher; including through publication, securing external research funding, and pursuing other relevant indicators of standing in the field. Seek external funding to support research and knowledge exchange activities. Conduct innovative research and scholarship evidenced by publications in peer-reviewed international journals (4 quality research).
Generate significant income through research grants and/or through success in increasing research student numbers. Determine research objectives, and initiate and implement a programme of research. Engage positively with the academic community in your field, within Sheffield and beyond Engage in professional and scholarly activities in line with expectations at this level including peer review of papers and grants, external examining, committee and professional body involvement, conference contributions, and advisory or policy roles nationally and internationally.

You will be required to undertake administrative and committee work in support of the needs of the wider School. Administrative duties will be determined with the Dean of School.
