About the Department





At SGS, we are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic lecturer in Games Engines to join our vibrant team. Our department is home to the cutting-edge FdSc Computer Game Design & Development and BA (Hons) Game Art & Production courses, where innovation and creativity thrive.




Our FdSc and BA programs are designed to push the boundaries of game design and production. You will have the opportunity to shape the minds of students who are eager to make their mark in the gaming industry. We have an inhouse studio Get Kraken Games, where students and staff collaborate on exciting projects.




Class sizes vary between 10 and 16 students per group for a more personalised degree learning experience, with around 80 students across all years and pathways in the department.




We are looking for a candidate with expertise in game engines (Unreal Engine 5) and a passion for teaching. Experience in the gaming industry is desirable but a strong understanding of game design and development processes is essential. Your enthusiasm for the subject and ability to inspire students will be key to your success in this role.




Key Tasks and Responsibilities

To tutor and lead games design students on full-time programmes. This includes all forms of pedagogic work which may include classroom teaching, tutorial work and associated outreach duties, residential, open and distance learning courses and student placements. To ensure the associated organisational and administrative work, preparation and marking is undertaken. To provide the appropriate student welfare and academic/non-academic counselling responsibilities. To conduct curriculum development work including identification of consumer requirements, planning, development and evaluation of courses and course materials. To ensure the administration and management of subjects/units/modules of education and training, or of significant facets or subdivision of these, is carried out. To support publicity and public relations related to the College is always carried out.

Qualifications & Key Skills

Educated to degree level and/or equivalent or have substantial relevant subject experience. You will be required to obtain a Stage 3 full professional qualification (PGCE in post-16 education or equivalent) within 2-4 years of commencing lecturing duties within the College if you don't already have one. Proficiency with Unreal Engine 5, with expertise in blueprint visual scripting, material and shader application, and UI/UX design. Skills in physics, AI, level design, VFX creation, lighting, rendering, techniques for performance optimisation and compiling/packaging. Strong understanding of game design principles, proficient in planning, game structure, loops, and core gameplay mechanics. Emphasis on balanced gameplay, rapid prototyping, contextual narrative, ethical design, version control and standardised practices.
