About us

------------

The Slade School of Fine Art is an art school where staff and students approach contemporary art practice, and the history and theories that inform it through experimentation, imagination and research-oriented practice.

The Slade is a department of University College London (UCL) with a lively and dynamic practice led research culture. Staff are practising artists, writers and theorists with significant research outputs and exhibition profiles, actively involved in research and teaching.

In 2025, the Slade is launching a new BA Art and Technology programme, which is an interdisciplinary degree focused on the interconnections between art practice and a range of new and disruptive technologies. It will also open a new studio space at UCL East to support students, academic staff and researchers to explore the intersection of art, technology and society through critical enquiry and studio practice.

About the role

------------------

We are recruiting for an academic Lecturer position for a practicing artist working broadly in the field of painting. The role requires the successful candidate to work on site in the Slade studios.

Some teaching responsibilities will include tutorial responsibility for a group of students; studio and workshop teaching in one-to-one and group situations with students from all three studio subject areas, and participation in the lively programme of tutorials, seminars and group crits.

Alongside teaching responsibilities, the post holder will hold an enabling role.

Working Pattern:

This is a 0.5 FTE role which equates to 2.5 days per week, which will include Mondays and Tuesdays.

Right to Work Eligibility

Please note, we will not be able to consider any candidates who require sponsorship, so all those applying must already have unrestricted right to work in the UK. Any applicants without right to work cannot be considered in the recruitment for this role.

Your Application and How To Apply

Applicants should submit a CV, covering letter and research statement. The covering letter should address why you are particularly interested in this post, how you fulfil the criteria listed in the person specification and why you would like to work at the Slade.

The research statement should provide a brief summary of your current research focus (no more than 300 words) and give examples of your most significant recent research outputs (no more than 500 words).

The CV and research statement can be attached separately and the covering letter should be completed within the application itself. Start the covering letter in the "Cover Letter" section and continue in the "Questionnaire" section, where additional boxes can be added.

Please

do not

upload images of your artwork to the application as they will not be considered by the shortlisting panel and may make the application difficult to download. Those invited to interview will be asked to present their art practice at interview.

Please note, the covering letter is an essential part of the application process and will be used alongside the CV for the purposes of shortlisting.*

About you

The successful candidate will be a practising artist dynamically engaged in the practices and discourses of contemporary painting, engaged in contemporary art debates and the wider cultural context. They will demonstrate an active engagement in debates concerning non-canonical approaches to art practice, the decolonisation of thought and art practice, and diversity within contemporary art. They should have an understanding of the relationship between studio practice and its interface with technical processes, such as specialist material knowledge within a field of Painting broadly defined.

They candidate must have a research profile with outputs of suitable quality for submission to the Research Excellent Framework (REF), and provide evidence of research and practice that questions canonical conventions of Fine Art and can inform innovative pedagogical and curriculum development. Examples may include research and practice that investigate or address experiences of race, gender identity, sexuality, cross-cultural and cross-regional interactions.

The candidate will have experience of teaching in Higher Education, showing a commitment to research-based teaching, and experience of inclusive teaching methods, such as safe space teaching
