About us
UCL Mechanical Engineering has been pioneering the development of engineering education, having taught the core discipline for over 170 years. UCL was home to the UK's first-ever Professor of the Mechanical Principles of Engineering, Eaton Hodgkinson, in 1847. It was also where Sir Alexander Blackie William Kennedy introduced organised laboratory practicals in university education training, a world-leading educational innovation at the time. Today our students are taught core engineering disciplines and supervised in individual and group research projects by academics that are recognised research world-leaders in their fields.
At UCL Mechanical Engineering, we develop and apply core competencies to produce world-class research into a wider range of engineering challenges than most would imagine. Amongst many other avenues, we are exploring:

• Designing lightweight materials and structures for structural, thermal and space applications
• Developing new processes and properties for additively manufactured materials
• Manufacturing and testing sustainable materials and structures for the circular economy
• Advanced manufacturing for marine applications
• Studying the micro/nanoscale thermofluidic technologies

World-leading educational innovation continues to this day. In 2019, we invested in a new workshop facility dedicated to teaching practical engineering, called MechSpace. It is a tailored space with Computer Aided Design and Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) capabilities to support multiple engineering projects, through the full design cycle: investigate, design, analyse, build, test and implement. In 2023, we launched three new practical MSc programmes at UCL East on groundbreaking topics in Mechanical Engineering: Nanoscale Manufacturing and Advanced Propulsion.
About the role
The main purpose of this role is to contribute to and support teaching in our mechanical engineering undergraduate (UG) programmes initially, and post-graduate taught (PGT) programmes in the future.
We are recruiting a candidate with a specific background in one of our two UG core streams: a) mechanics and materials, or b) thermo/fluids. Please indicate clearly which stream you wish to be considered for in your application materials.
The post holder will have some element of involvement at every level of our programmes. This will include, for instance, introductory (UG Y1-Y2) level modules, and/or specialist (UG Y3-Y4/Masters) modules in the two streams outlined above. The successful candidate will lead teaching sessions and workshops, design and deliver laboratory sessions, and participate in departmental outreach activities. They will also contribute to the design and implementation of a high-quality curriculum and will assist in the development of learning materials, preparing schemes of work and maintaining records to monitor student progress, achievement and attendance.
About you
The successful applicant will be a natural and effective communicator, first and foremost. They will also have an excellent level of technical background in mechanical engineering, and an interest in engineering education, evidenced by a strong publication record. We would be delighted to receive applications from applicants who meet the following criteria:

• PhD in an Engineering subject
• Experience and demonstrated achievement in curriculum design
• Demonstrated excellence in university-level teaching in the areas of materials and mechanics, or thermo/fluids, through theoretical and practical classes.
• A demonstrated record of participating in the supervision of individual and group projects at undergraduate or postgraduate level.
• Experience of using engineering software for simulation including e.g. FEA, CFD, Matlab, Python.
• A strong publication record in an engineering subject and/or educational research
• The ability to motivate and engage students.
• Time management skills
• The ability to communicate information to others clearly and concisely, both in person and in writing, including being able to explain complex technical concepts to students.
• The ability to work independently and as part of a team, recognising when advice / input needs to be sought, and maintaining a positive attitude to colleagues, staff and students.
• Willingness to continually undertake training and personal development as required and appropriate to the role and to develop new skills.
