The Department of Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering is one of the largest Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering departments in the UK. The Department is proud to host internationally leading research groups covering a broad range of activities and spread over several sites. Our staff and students have a diverse range of interests and expertise, covering many areas of physics, engineering, medicine, physiology, computer science, and mathematics. Our focus is on excellent academic research in identifying new technologies and methods for diagnosis, treatment and management of diseases using medical imaging, physiological monitoring, and the development of implanted devices. We also offer a range of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in these fields.




About the role

Applications are invited for a fixed-term Lecturer (Teaching) position to strengthen the teaching provision for our department's undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Duties involve multiple aspects of the delivery and organisation of the department's various programmes, including classroom teaching, assessment setting and marking, running laboratory sessions, supervision of practical work and research projects, personal and academic tutoring, and monitoring student progress, achievement and attendance. These activities will predominantly revolve around Python programming, Artificial Intelligence, image or video analysis and processing, and/or computer vision - each geared towards (bio)medical applications. You will also contribute to the development, planning and implementation of high-quality curriculums, and assist in the development of learning materials, preparing schemes of work.


This is a fixed-term role with a duration of 36 months. We will consider applications to work on a part-time, flexible and job share basis wherever possible. About you

The successful applicant will have a Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in Biomedical Engineering or a relevant STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) subject, with experience of applying this knowledge to biomedical engineering contexts.


The applicant will have experience of teaching using problem-based learning and laboratory-based learning, and experience of teaching undergraduate and/or postgraduate students. They will be able to demonstrate knowledge and practical experience of using a broad range of subjects, including Python programming, AI, image or video analysis and processing, and/or computer vision. In addition, they have knowledge of how these techniques are deployed in (bio)medical applications. Expertise in and experience with MATLAB would be desirable.



The applicant will have excellent organisation and time management skills, adaptability, and the ability to learn new topics quickly. They will have excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, and attention to detail. They are keen to work collaboratively and as part of a team.
