Grade 9 (Senior Lecturer) \xc2\xa359,421- \xc2\xa366,857 per annum. Potential to progress to \xc2\xa377,475 per annum through sustained exceptional contribution.

Summary:

This is an outstanding opportunity for a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Natural Language Processing to join the Department of Computer Science at the University of Sheffield. The post is supported by a PhD studentship (paying UK student fees and stipend for 3.5 years) and a generous startup package for equipment and travel.

You will work within our internationally respected Natural Language Processing (NLP) Research Group. Established in 1993, the group is one of the largest and most successful language processing groups in the UK. It currently comprises twelve academics, with research interests that span machine learning, information extraction and text mining, social media and disinformation analysis, machine translation, language resources and architectures for NLP, biomedical text mining, human-computer dialogue systems, computational social science, natural language generation, and text summarisation. Together with the Speech and Hearing Group, the NLP group hosts a , which has funding to train 60 PhD students over an 8 year period and has close connections with industry partners.

To drive our research agenda in NLP forward, we are now seeking to appoint a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer. Ideally you will work in one of the following areas, which have been identified as a strategic priority:

  • Social media analysis
  • Computational social science
  • Natural language generation and text summarisation
  • Dialogue systems
  • Biomedical text mining
  • Machine translation
You will hold a PhD in Computer Science or a related area, and be able to conduct research to the highest standards. This will include securing research funding, publishing in high impact journals and conferences, supervision of research students and research project management. In addition, you will play a key role in maintaining our reputation for high-quality teaching by designing, delivering and assessing undergraduate and postgraduate level programmes in NLP and other topics in computer science.
