Job Summary

We are a busy and well-established family law firm seeking a reliable and organised Legal Assistant to support our solicitors while also covering reception duties. This role is ideal for someone with strong administrative skills, a professional manner, and experience or interest in Scottish family law and legal aid work.

The successful candidate will play a key role in the day-to-day running of the office, acting as the first point of contact for clients and providing essential support to the legal team.

Key Responsibilities

Legal Assistant Duties

Providing administrative support to solicitors specialising in family law Preparing, formatting and proofreading legal documents and correspondence Managing files (paper and electronic), including opening, closing, and archiving files Assisting with Scottish Legal Aid applications, amendments, and compliance requirements Liaising with clients, courts, Scottish Legal Aid Board, and other third parties Diary management, scheduling appointments, and court dates General office administration as required
Reception Duties

Acting as the first point of contact for clients, both in person and by telephone Greeting clients in a professional, courteous, and empathetic manner Managing incoming calls, messages, post, and emails Photocopying, scanning, and filing documents Maintaining reception and waiting areas Handling general enquiries and directing them appropriately
Essential Skills & Experience

Previous experience in a legal assistant, legal secretary, or administrative role (preferred) Familiarity with Scottish Legal Aid procedures is highly desirable Strong organisational and time-management skills Excellent communication and interpersonal skills Professional, discreet, and empathetic approach when dealing with sensitive family matters Competent IT skills, including Microsoft Word, Outlook, and document management systems Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Desirable (but not essential)

Experience working in a family law environment Knowledge of Scottish court procedures Legal or administrative qualification
