Reporting to the International General Counsel, the successful candidate will support the in providing advice and support on all legal matters affecting The Hartford International's operations, ensuring adherence to relevant laws and regulations across the UK, EU, Hong Kong and Singapore, and assisting in managing legal risks.


Collaborate closely with senior key stakeholders within International and at Group level, and assist in driving improvements in legal processes, to help shape the legal function's impact on the wider business.

This role will be based in London, UK and you are required to have the necessary right to work details prior to application.

Key Responsibilities



Assist in providing legal advice on a broad range of legal matters, on underwriting, claims, compliance, commercial and corporate governance. Assist in identifying, assessing and managing current and emerging legal risks and support the development of strategies to mitigate these risks effectively, including the need for any required change in practices. Assist in building and maintaining an effective team and legal partnering proposition, balancing risk and expense and delivery of a high- quality legal service to the wider business. Provide insurance and non-insurance related legal advice under local law (in conjunction with external legal advisors where scale, complexity and specialist knowledge require): + Insurance related contracts and arrangements, including but not limited to delegations of authority, non-market standard clauses in TOBAs, claims handling arrangements, non-standard broker agreements and fee arrangements, market agreements and initiatives.
+ General corporate / commercial law matters including but not limited to corporate transactions, outsourcing and commercial contracts, intellectual property, real estate, employment contracts.
Collaborate with Compliance to assist in ensuring The Hartford's International and syndicate's operations comply with relevant laws and regulations, particularly those specific to the Lloyd's market and insurance industry, which can include sanctions, financial crime, and conduct risk, and the development and implementation of internal policies and procedures to ensure legal and regulatory compliance. Advise on existing insurance policy endorsements and wordings, and product and policy wording development. Provide support to the governance and company secretarial function as may be required. Provide assistance in conducting training sessions for staff on legal and compliance matters to promote awareness and understanding within the business.

Skills and Experience



UK qualified lawyer (with 3-5+ years' PQE) or equivalent, desirable mix of private practice and in-house. Experience in insurance law and regulation, and desirable Lloyd's/London insurance market practices. Experience and knowledge of PRA/FCA and Lloyd's regulatory regimes. Knowledge of UK/EU sanctions and OFAC sanctions. Excellent commercial risk awareness. Strong analytical, organisational, and communication skills, with the ability to assist in conveying complex legal information clearly and concisely. High attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks . Strong problem-solving skills and ability to assist in making sound legal decisions sometimes under tight deadlines. Collaborative team player, with a high level of professionalism, integrity, and ethical conduct.
