British Steel is looking for a Legal Counsel to join our Business Services Function and work closely with the Legal Director. As the steel industry evolves, we're embracing change and innovation. This role is ideal for a mid-level legal professional with at least three years of post-qualification experience (PQE). It offers a dynamic environment where you can apply and expand your expertise within a company undergoing exciting transformation.



The role is primarily focuses on commercial and corporate law, though experience in other relevant practice areas will also be considered. It offers a diverse legal scope, allowing you to apply your expertise to a range of challenges within a dynamic industry.


Key Responsibilities



Include but are not limited to;

As Legal Counsel at British Steel, you will work closely with the Legal Director, providing expert advice across a broad spectrum of commercial legal matters and corporate support functions. Your role will include but is not limited to;

Negotiating and advising

on diverse commercial transactions.

Drafting and reviewing

a range of contractual documents, including sale and purchase agreements, IP licenses, and confidentiality agreements.

Managing early-stage disputes

and collaborating with external counsel on litigation matters.

Supporting key departments

such as estates, HR, finance, and R&D on legal concerns.

Overseeing external advisers

to ensure high-quality service and cost efficiency.

Monitoring legal and regulatory changes

and delivering training to enhance business practices.

Contributing to compliance efforts

to uphold standards.

Understanding and enforcing company policies,

with responsibility for maintaining the legal framework where required.

This position is primarily based at our integrated steelworks in Scunthorpe, though there may be flexibility to work from other locations or in a hybrid capacity, depending on business needs.


What we need to know about you



This role presents an exciting opportunity for a qualified legal professional licensed to practice in England and Wales. You should have solid experience in key aspects of company and commercial law, with previous in-house experience being advantageous but not essential. Ideally, you will have worked across multiple jurisdictions and practice areas.

Strong communication skills are vital, as you'll collaborate with colleagues across all levels and disciplines within the organization. Given the scale and complexity of British Steel, legal challenges are diverse and technically demanding, requiring sound judgment and innovative problem-solving abilities.
