Job Summary


Apex Litigation Finance Limited is a company which brings together experienced individuals from the litigation funding, legal and finance sectors to provide third party litigation funding to litigants (corporates, liquidators, and individuals) who are unable to pursue a claim due to the prohibitive cost of litigation.

Although the litigant's case may have merits, uncertainty over the total costs and the potential risk of being ordered to pay the defendant's costs, should they lose the case, prohibits access to justice for many claimants.

Following an assessment of the merits of the litigant's case, Apex will commit funds to pay legal and other costs associated with the case in return for an agreed fee upon a successful conclusion. If there is no recovery, or if the case is lost, there is no debt for the litigant to repay.

The role of the Case Underwriter will be focussed on the assessment and approval, or rejection, of new litigation funding applications, whilst managing and monitoring the performance of existing funded matters.

Duties



Gathering of all information, for each new litigation funding application, to enable a complete assessment and judgement of the investment risk. Ensure adherence to the company's new case assessment process. Recommend approval of investment, to the company's risk committee, on applications which satisfy the company's agreed case criteria. Creation of funding proposals. Reject applications which fall outside of the company's agreed case criteria. Monitor progress of on-going cases. Ensure adherence to the company's auditing and monitoring process. Plan and prioritise own work to meet company service standards, and to ensure all new applications are progressed efficiently. Work and communicate effectively with all stakeholders, both internal and external (including: solicitors, claimants, brokers, ATE providers, barristers, etc), to build strong relationships.

Experience



Experience of the UK commercial litigation and ATE (After The Event insurance) sectors would be preferable Familiarity of the UK litigation process would be preferable Proven experience in underwriting within the legal, ATE insurance or litigation funding sectors is preferred, but not mandatory. An interest in risk analysis and quantitative analysis is essential. Proficiency in data interpretation is required. Ability to review complex information, make investment decisions, create case memorandum and present opportunities to internal & external committees. Excellent negotiation skills with the ability to communicate effectively with clients and colleagues alike.
