Complex Live-in Carer (Mental Health & Learning Disabilities)

Registered Manager / Care Coordinator

Location:

Client's Home (Live-in placement)

Contract Type:

Full-time (Live-in, rota-based)

Salary/Rate:

Competitive (dependent on experience and qualifications)

Role Purpose



The Complex Live-in Carer provides round-the-clock care and support to adults with mental health conditions, learning disabilities, autism, and complex physical or behavioural needs. This role requires resilience, compassion, and the ability to create a safe, structured, and supportive environment where individuals can thrive and live with dignity.

The carer will support personal care, medication, and clinical routines, but equally will promote

independence, empowerment, and positive mental health

. This role involves working as part of a multidisciplinary team, following agreed care and behaviour support plans, and advocating for the individual's rights and wellbeing.

Key Responsibilities



Care & Support



Provide

high-quality personal care

(washing, dressing, continence care, oral care, skin care, mobility assistance). Support individuals with

daily living skills

, including shopping, cooking, cleaning, and budgeting. Monitor

physical and emotional wellbeing

, reporting any concerns promptly. Encourage healthy lifestyle choices (diet, exercise, sleep, social activities). Implement structured daily routines that promote

stability and emotional safety

.

Mental Health & Behavioural Support



Work with individuals who may present

challenging behaviours, self-harm, or heightened anxiety

, responding calmly and professionally. Follow

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) plans

and agreed de-escalation strategies. Encourage self-expression, choice, and independence while maintaining safety. Monitor and record

mood, triggers, and patterns

to inform ongoing care planning.

Medical & Medication



Administer and record

medication

in line with policies, care plans, and MAR charts. Support with

appointments, hospital visits, and liaising with healthcare professionals

. Safely use

clinical equipment

(hoists, PEG feeds, oxygen, suction, etc.) where trained and required. Recognise and respond appropriately to

medical emergencies

.

Community & Social Engagement



Facilitate access to

education, volunteering, day services, and leisure activities

. Encourage social interaction and support integration into community life. Build trust and rapport while maintaining

professional boundaries

.

Safeguarding, Safety & Compliance



Uphold

safeguarding policies

and report any concerns immediately. Maintain accurate and timely

records, daily notes, incident reports, and care plan updates

. Adhere to

infection prevention and control

, health & safety, and GDPR requirements. Ensure the home environment remains safe, clean, and appropriate to the client's needs.

Person Specification



Essential



Proven experience supporting adults with

mental health conditions, learning disabilities, autism, or complex care needs

. Confidence in managing

challenging behaviours

using PBS or other structured approaches. Strong communication skills (verbal, written, and non-verbal). Ability to work

independently and under pressure

, maintaining professionalism at all times. Resilience, patience, and emotional intelligence. Willingness to work

long shifts/live-in patterns

, including evenings, weekends, and holidays. Understanding of

safeguarding, dignity, confidentiality, and data protection

.

Desirable



QCF/NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Health & Social Care

(or equivalent). Training in

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS), MAPA/PMVA, Mental Health First Aid, or Breakaway Techniques

. Experience with

clinical procedures

(PEG feeds, epilepsy management, diabetes care, catheter care, stoma care, etc.). Full UK driving licence.
