Job Title: Locum Consultant Psychiatrist in General Adult Psychiatry



Contract Type:



Locum - Full-time / Part-time
(Usually 10 PA contract - 8 DCC + 2 SPA, depending on service needs)

Clinical Director / Medical Director, Mental Health Services

Job Summary:



The post holder will provide clinical leadership and psychiatric expertise to the General Adult Psychiatry service, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, patient-centred care. The role involves assessment, diagnosis, and management of patients with severe and enduring mental illness in inpatient and/or community settings.

The Locum Consultant will work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams (MDTs), including nursing, psychology, social work, and occupational therapy colleagues.

Key Responsibilities:



Clinical Duties:



Provide comprehensive psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for adults with mental health disorders. Act as

Responsible Clinician (RC)

for detained patients under the Mental Health Act (MHA). Undertake

Section 12(2) MHA assessments

as required. Lead on care planning, risk management, and multidisciplinary reviews. Provide clinical supervision and support to junior medical staff (CT, ST, SAS doctors). Participate in Mental Health Act reviews, Tribunals, and Managers' Hearings. Engage in quality improvement initiatives, clinical governance, and audit.

Leadership & Management:



Provide clinical leadership to the MDT. Contribute to service development and implementation of Trust strategies. Participate in consultant and service meetings.

Teaching & Training:



Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching (medical students, trainees). Supervise trainee psychiatrists and participate in educational activities.

On-call Duties:



Participate in the consultant on-call rota for Mental Health Services (frequency varies by Trust).

Qualifications & Requirements:



Essential:



MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.

Full GMC registration with licence to practise.

MRCPsych

(or equivalent qualification recognised by the GMC).

Included on the GMC Specialist Register for Psychiatry


- or within 6 months of attaining CCT at time of interview.

Approved under Section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act 1983 (amended 2007).

Approved Clinician (AC) status.

Demonstrated competence in general adult psychiatry (inpatient or community). Experience in multidisciplinary team working. Excellent communication, leadership, and organisational skills.

Desirable:



Experience in service development or clinical leadership roles. Experience in teaching and supervision of trainees. Participation in research, audit, or quality improvement. Familiarity with electronic patient record systems (e.g., RiO, SystmOne).

Professional Development:



The Trust supports continuing professional development (CPD) in line with the Royal College of Psychiatrists' guidelines. CPD time (typically 1 PA weekly) and funding are available for relevant educational activities.

Contract length: 12 months

Pay: 87.56-125.00 per hour

Expected hours: 45 - 50 per week
