One post for a Consultant in Trauma & Orthopaedics is advertised in general and complex trauma with
a special interest in foot & ankle to complement the current consultants in the Orthopaedic Department
within Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. The successful candidate would join the existing team of
nine consultants at University Hospital Lewisham and ten consultants at Queen Elizabeth Hospital
Woolwich. Elective work is to be carried out at the Lewisham site.
The appointment (10PAs) will be made in accordance with the 2003 Consultant Terms and Conditions.
The post holder will be expected to provide regular trauma sessions and be involved in audit and
clinical governance as required. The post holder will participate in a 1:9 on call rota supported by a full
junior doctor team.

3. General Description of the Post
Introduction
This post will be for a consultant in Trauma & Orthopaedics, with expertise in complex trauma and foot and ankle
surgery. The post will be for 10 PAs. On-call cover will be based at University Hospital Lewisham covering a 1 in
9 on-call rota for weekends and non-resident nights. Daytime elective work can be scheduled at both hospital
sites, but is almost always undertaken at the Lewisham hospital site due to the number of operating theatres on
this site. Trauma activity can be scheduled at both sites.
Proven competency in trauma and lower limb surgery will be required. This post is important to the Trust to ensure
the continuation of our excellent and busy Orthopaedic Service and support the 18-weeks target.
The successful candidates would join the existing team of 20 substantive consultants at Lewisham and Greenwich
NHS Trust.
The appointment will be made in accordance with the 2003 Consultant Terms and Conditions of Service. The
post holder will be expected to provide regular trauma sessions and to participate in clinical governance and

Duties of post
1. The post holder will participate in the Consultant led trauma service to maintain a
high quality trauma service with Consultant involvement in early operative work and
fracture clinic supervision. The appointee would be encouraged to further develop
and update skills in the acute management of complex fractures and the
management of a foot & ankle service.
2. Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust serves a young sporty population and the
referrals of sports related and soft tissue problems are also increasing. The
candidate will be expected to be competent in managing these patients.
3. The post holder will be required to adopt a continuing responsibility for the care of
patients in his/her charge in partnership with other consultant colleagues.
4. He/she will be expected to fully participate in the teaching activities of the
Directorate.
5. For the purpose of management and use of resources, he/she will be accountable
to the Clinical Director of Orthopaedics and work closely with the Service Manager.
6. He/she will share in the Directorates' management and administrative
responsibilities.
7. The post holder undertakes, exceptionally, to perform additional duties in
occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.
8. The appointee will be responsible for the professional supervision and
management of junior staff and participate in their appointment with other
Consultants.
9. The appointee will be expected to participate in postgraduate teaching of medical
staff and undergraduates attached to the Trust and in the training of all grades of
staff.
10. The appointee will participate on a regular basis in the process of Clinical Audit
within the department and take on the audit role for the department. The appointee
will be expected to attend department and divisional clinical governance meetings
as requested.
11. He/she will be required to maintain an "on-call" (1:8) commitment and to provide
prospective cover for colleagues on a mutually agreed basis in respect of absence
from duty. He/she will be expected to co-operate in the present agreed framework
of the directorate management structure arrangements.

2. On Call Requirement
Under the Terms and Conditions of the Service of Hospital Medical and Dental Staff it is
expected that the Consultant will have continuing responsibility for patients admitted under his
care, taking into consideration a shared on-call amongst 10 Consultants.
Active participation on the "On-Call" currently at 1:8 weekdays and 1:9 weekends is a pre-requisite.
3. Special Interest
The current Consultants' interests include knee surgery, foot & ankle, soft tissue knee, hip
surgery, paediatric surgery and upper limb surgery. The trauma load is shared equally amongst
the Consultants and a Trauma Meeting is held each weekday morning at 8.00 am. Some
minimal invasive and minimal access surgery is conducted in the Trust. The development of a
specialist interest in foot & ankle to compliment the above would be encouraged.
4. Teaching Requirement
This post will be expected to participate in Audit, teaching of Undergraduates, Postgraduates, Nursing
and Allied Health Professionals.
The successful candidate will be encouraged to participate in continuing postgraduate medical education
by attending conferences and training courses as required by the RCS.
The Department of Orthopaedic surgery has developed a strong commitment to teaching and
training. There are daily trauma teaching meetings so as to plan the treatment of emergency
patients for the day. We participate actively in South East Thames Orthopaedic training and
have designated weekly teaching sessions for the junior doctors in the department.
There will be opportunity for research/CPD during the supporting professional activity
sessions. These sessions are designed to give the individual the flexibility to develop a
specialist interest, undertake some research or teaching of the junior medical staff and to
maintain skills.
All Consultants will be expected to register for CPD.
