The post holder will be part of a team of 17 consultants providing a comprehensive emergency trauma and elective orthopaedic service. This is a replacement post and will include support from a middle-grade doctor.
Elective work, including outpatients and theatres, takes place at St Albans City Hospital. Trauma and non-elective work, including fracture clinics, are based at Watford General Hospital. Timings for clinics and theatre sessions are coordinated to allow adequate travel time between sites. The department is well-staffed across both locations, supporting consistent and high-quality care
The appointee is expected to be confident in managing both upper and lower limb trauma, as the post comprises a 50:50 split between Trauma and elective lower limb work. Given potential changes in service demand, there may be a need to expand the trauma element of the role.
The appointee will be expected to contribute actively to administrative, teaching, and research activities within the department. Consultants are expected to represent the department on various Trust committees and take on delegated responsibilities in line with their interests and departmental needs, as assigned by the Clinical Director.
All consultants are responsible for supervising Specialist Registrars, who rotate through the department as part of their training. The appointee is also expected to contribute meaningfully to governance and quality improvement, demonstrating a commitment to high standards of patient care and safety.
