Job Summary:



The

Locum Specialist Registrar (SpR)

will provide high-quality clinical care within the A&E department of an NHS Trust on a temporary agency contract. The role involves independently managing patients presenting with a broad spectrum of emergencies, in both a supervised and unsupervised capacity, while gaining valuable experience in a high-pressure environment. As a locum, the individual will need to be adaptable to the specific needs and demands of the NHS Trust, providing continuity of care in the absence of permanent staff.

Key Responsibilities:

1.

Clinical Care:



Initial Assessment & Management

: Assess, diagnose, and manage patients presenting with medical, surgical, trauma, and paediatric emergencies.

Triage and Prioritisation

: Make critical decisions regarding the urgency of patient care using clinical judgment in a fast-paced environment.

Emergency Procedures

: Perform a range of emergency procedures, including intubations, chest drains, wound suturing, and casting.

Collaboration

: Work closely with junior doctors, nurses, paramedics, and allied health professionals to deliver cohesive patient care.

Patient Safety

: Ensure patient safety by adhering to all NHS Trust protocols and guidelines, as well as ensuring effective documentation of patient care.

Supervision and Teaching:



Supervision

: Provide leadership and supervision to junior doctors and medical students.

Teaching

: Actively participate in teaching sessions, especially for more junior staff, to promote evidence-based best practices in emergency medicine.

Training & Development

: Participate in Continuing Medical Education (CME) to maintain and enhance your skills in emergency medicine.

Emergency Response:



Respond promptly to emergencies such as cardiac arrest, trauma, and medical emergencies, providing leadership and clinical expertise as required. Take on-call shifts as necessary and be available for rapid response situations.

Administrative Responsibilities:



Maintain accurate and up-to-date medical records, ensuring compliance with NHS policies and procedures. Liaise with consultants, senior medical staff, and nursing teams to ensure continuity of care and smooth patient flow within the department. Participate in departmental audits and quality improvement initiatives to enhance the standard of care.

Shift Work & Flexibility:



As a locum, work flexibly within the department, which may involve unsociable hours, weekends, night shifts, and public holidays. Adapt to the specific needs of the department during the assignment, ensuring that patient care is not compromised.

Essential Qualifications and Experience:



Medical Degree

(MBBS or equivalent).

Full GMC Registration

with license to practice.

Specialist Registrar Training

in Emergency Medicine (or related field).

Experience

in Accident & Emergency or Acute Medicine.

Advanced Life Support (ALS)

or equivalent certification.

Relevant A&E Experience

(minimum of 2-3 years at registrar level or equivalent).

Ability to work in a fast-paced environment

, demonstrating excellent clinical decision-making under pressure.

Desirable Qualifications & Skills:



ATLS (Advanced Trauma Life Support)

or

PALS (Paediatric Advanced Life Support)

certification. Previous experience as a locum in an NHS Trust. Strong leadership skills, with the ability to manage acute emergencies independently. Proven ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams.

Working Conditions:



Shift Work

: Due to the nature of the role, you will be required to work flexible hours, including night shifts, weekends, and bank holidays.

Location

: The locum assignment will be based in various departments across the NHS Trust, which may involve working across multiple hospital sites depending on the assignment.

: Competitive hourly rates, paid weekly (subject to agency terms).

Pay: 65.09-85.00 per hour
