Job Description

We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic, forward-thinking, and progressive specialist to join our dynamic Trauma and Orthopaedics team. This exciting secondment position offers the opportunity to work across three key sites: City Health Campus, Midland Metropolitan Hospital, and Sandwell Health Campus, including participation in the on-call rota.



This six-month secondment is available to start as soon as possible and is ideally suited for senior trainees or middle-grade doctors seeking to take on additional responsibilities in a consultant-level role.

This post is intended to be step up post for a senior middle grade who is competent in delivery of care to a trauma patient. It is intended to relieve the consultant doing week of trauma theatres, on occasions, to help deliver elective activity and meet production plan for the department

The appointee should be able to work flexible during the week and some weekends to be able to provide this service.



The appointee will be expected to cover the second trauma theatre at MMUH at least twice a week and will have one clinic alternative week for the follow up for the operated cases. They may also be asked to cover the ambulatory trauma cases at STC.



The successful applicant will primarily be responsible for delivering high-quality trauma care but will also be expected to support and enhance the subspecialty surgical interests of the existing consultant team. In addition, the postholder will contribute to the ongoing development of the Black Country Alliance services in collaboration with Russell's Hall Hospital (Dudley) and Manor Hospital (Walsall), working towards a more integrated regional service model.



A commitment to the general orthopaedic on-call rota may be required as part of this post, currently operating on a 1-in-12 basis with a split between weekday and weekend duties.

The Trauma and Orthopaedics Department at Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust provides comprehensive care for patients with musculoskeletal injuries and conditions. Services encompass the treatment of injuries to bones and joints, including hips, knees, feet, ankles, shoulders, elbows, and hands. The department also manages soft tissue injuries involving ligaments, tendons, muscles, and nerves.

Clinical Services



Trauma Care:

The department offers 24/7 trauma services across its sites, managing complex upper and lower limb injuries.

Elective Orthopaedic Surgery:

A broad range of elective procedures is performed, including joint replacements and reconstructive surgeries.

Subspecialties:

The department supports various subspecialties, such as foot and ankle surgery, ensuring comprehensive patient care.

Collaborative Initiatives As part of the Black Country Alliance, the Trust collaborates with Russell's Hall Hospital in Dudley and Manor Hospital in Walsall to develop integrated regional services. This partnership aims to enhance service delivery and provide patients with seamless access to specialized care.
