Luganda Language Interpreter

Job Description

We are seeking highly skilled and professional Luganda Language Interpreters to provide accurate, confidential, and impartial interpreting services between English and Luganda. This role is crucial in facilitating effective communication for individuals and organisations across various sectors, including legal, medical (NHS), local government, and business settings within the UK.

This is typically a freelance/self-employed position with flexible hours based on assignment demand.

Key Responsibilities



Provide consecutive and, occasionally, simultaneous or whispered (chuchotage

)

interpretation between Luganda and English in a professional manner. Accurately and completely convey the meaning of the spoken message, including tone, cultural context, and intent, without adding, omitting, or substituting any information. Maintain strict

confidentiality

and impartiality in all assignments, adhering to a professional Code of Conduct (e.g., the National Register of Public Service Interpreters - NRPSI Code of Conduct, or similar professional body standards). Interpret in diverse settings, which may include:

Legal:

Courts, police stations, solicitor offices, immigration/asylum interviews.

Health:

Hospitals, GP surgeries, mental health appointments.

Public Service:

Local councils, social services, housing benefit interviews.

Business:

Meetings, training sessions, negotiations. Manage assignments professionally, including being punctual, prepared for the topic, and adhering to agreed-upon schedules. Keep clear and accurate records of assignments as required by the contracting agency or client. Utilise remote interpreting platforms (telephone and video) efficiently when required.

Requirements



Native-Level Fluency:

Exceptional proficiency in both spoken and understood

Luganda (Oluganda)

and English. This includes a deep understanding of cultural nuances and dialectal variations.

UK Eligibility:

Must be eligible to work on a self-employed or contract basis in the UK.

Professional Conduct:

Strong commitment to professionalism, ethics, and maintaining strict client confidentiality.

Communication Skills:

Excellent active listening, verbal communication, and interpersonal skills.

Availability:

Flexibility to accept assignments, often at short notice, and travel to various locations across the UK (depending on assignment type).

Highly Desirable (A significant advantage)



Previous Interpreting Experience:

Prior professional experience providing public service, legal, or medical interpreting services is a significant advantage.
Job Types: Part-time, Freelance

Pay: 15.00-20.00 per hour

Expected hours: 2 per week

Work Location: On the road
