Age UK Exeter are launching their Sycamores Community Cafe early in 2026 and are seeking a reliable and enthusiastic Lunchtime Assistant & Cook to work as part of a team to support the cafe with preparation and delivery of nutritious, high-quality snacks and meals.
This person will also be supporting the Sycamore days service for older adults. The ideal candidate will have a passion for good food, an understanding of nutritional needs in an older person setting, and the flexibility to step into cooking duties when required.
Age UK Exeter will be welcoming all members of the community to its new Sycamores cafe, so this candidate needs to have good communication and people skills to support this initiative.
Main Duties
Assist with daily food preparation, ensuring meals are appealing, balanced, and suitable for older individuals.
Cook meals independently when required, following established menus and dietary guidelines.
Support food ordering and shopping, ensuring adequate supplies are maintained.
Carry out stock control, rotating stock and checking use-by dates to minimize waste.
Keep the kitchen and dining areas clean, tidy, and hygienic always.
Wash up and ensure all equipment is cleaned and stored properly.
Ensure kitchen is kept clean and up to food hygiene standards.
Follow food safety standards and maintain accurate records where needed.
Contribute to creating a warm, welcoming and safe mealtime environment.
Good organizational skills, especially regarding stock and ordering.

Person Specification
Essential:
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, particularly when working with volunteers.
Literate
Ability to work independently and follow direction from team leaders.
A strong commitment to food hygiene
Dependable and energetic with a real enthusiasm for your work
Positive attitude, reliability, and a genuine passion for good, wholesome food.
Desirable Skills & Qualifications:
Level 2 Food safety Certificate (or willingness to work towards it).
Experience preparing meals for older adults or in a similar care setting.
Knowledge of nutrition and dietary needs related to older people.
Previous experience working in a dementia care setting.
Experience working with volunteers
