About Us





Diamond Light Source is the UK's national synchrotron science facility. By accelerating electrons to near light-speed, Diamond generates brilliant beams of light from infra-red to X-rays which are used for academic and industry research and development across a range of scientific disciplines including structural biology, physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering, earth and environmental sciences.





At Diamond we are currently undertaking a major upgrade of the facility, known as Diamond-II. Diamond-II will combine a new machine and new beamlines with a comprehensive series of upgrades to optics, detectors, sample environments, sample delivery capabilities and computing, which will ultimately generate an even more brilliant light source at a higher energy.




About the Role





We now have an opportunity for a Magnet Technician to be part of the team assembling, testing and commissioning of the permanent magnet Dipoles required for the Diamond-II upgrade.





Your responsibilities include:


Measuring permanent magnet and electromagnet devices. Carrying out inspection of manufactured items to drawings. Operating overhead cranes and pallet trucks. Setting up the electromagnets to electrical and cooling supplies as required for testing Assembling permanent magnet devices



About You





You will have proven technical experience, not necessarily directly related to the tasks., with a minimum of NVQ level 2 or equivalent qualification, equivalent work experience will also be considered.





You will have the ability to:


Understand and interpret mechanical drawings. Carry out a variety of light mechanical and electrical assembly tasks, including soldering. Interact with people at all levels.




Experience in this area is desirable:


Magnet materials. Producing simple engineering drawings. Compressed air, simple water-cooling circuit, and electrical connections.
