Job Description

To ensure the care home is maintained to a high standard of safety, cleanliness, and appearance. The Maintenance Person will be responsible for day-to-day repairs, preventative maintenance, basic health and safety checks, light gardening duties, and portable appliance testing (PAT).

The handy-man role is Monday-Friday 9am-2pm.

Key Responsibilities:



General Maintenance:



Carry out routine maintenance, repairs, and decoration throughout the home (e.g. plumbing, joinery, painting, basic electrical tasks). Respond promptly to maintenance requests from staff or management. Keep a maintenance log of completed and outstanding work. Ensure tools and materials are stored safely and securely. Liaise with external contractors when required and supervise them on-site if necessary.

Health & Safety Compliance:



Conduct regular safety checks (fire alarms, emergency lighting, water temperature monitoring, etc.) as per care home policy. Carry out

PAT testing

of electrical appliances and maintain accurate records. Report any hazards, defects, or maintenance concerns immediately to the Home Manager. Ensure compliance with Health & Safety and infection control regulations.

Gardening and Outdoor Maintenance:



Perform

light gardening duties

including mowing, weeding, planting, and maintaining outdoor spaces. Keep pathways, driveways, and entrances clean, tidy, and safe (e.g. gritting during icy weather). Assist with seasonal decorations or outdoor projects to enhance the home's appearance.

Handyman Duties:



Assemble furniture, hang pictures, replace light bulbs, repair fixtures and fittings as needed. Assist with moving or setting up equipment and furniture around the home. Support with occasional small refurbishment or improvement projects.

Person Specification:



Essential:



Proven experience in general maintenance or a similar handyman role. Good working knowledge of basic plumbing, electrical, joinery, and decorating tasks. Ability to carry out

PAT testing

(qualification or willingness to train). Practical, reliable, and able to prioritise work effectively. Friendly, approachable manner with residents and staff. Awareness of Health & Safety regulations.

Desirable:



Previous experience in a care home or similar environment. Gardening or grounds keeping experience. Basic IT or record-keeping skills.

Additional Information:



ACCESSNI check required. Must be willing to undertake relevant training (including Health & Safety and PAT certification if not already held). Occasional flexibility in working hours may be required for urgent repairs or inspections.
