Job summary




As the Defence integrator, Strategic Command (UKStratCom) sits at the heart of Defence, giving us the winning edge in an ever-uncertain and competitive world. Every single operation relies on the connectivity and skills we offer the whole of the Armed Forces.The UKStratCom Finance Function supports multiple Service Directorates - the Headquarters; Defence Medical Services; Defence Intelligence; Defence Digital; Special Forces; National Cyber Force; Directorate of Overseas Bases; Defence Support; and Permanent Joint Headquarters. Following implementation of Finance Transformation (FinTx) in January 2025, the function is now made up of over 180 finance personnel across Finance Operations, Specialist Services, Finance Business Partnering Teams and Finance Military Operations.


Management Information and Ad hoc Reporting team are expected to produce bespoke analysis and information above the regular reporting outputs to support business areas, FBPs and the SLT on decision making. The team will also develop new tools and reports that can be implemented into BAU working practices.


This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

Job description




Management Information and Adhoc Reporting team is responsible for delivering bespoke MI for Senior Leadership and Budget Holders, where standard reports do not meet the requirement. You will produce accurate, timely, high-quality reports and insightful management information to FBPs and their Business areas. Supporting Finance Operations, providing guidance and upskilling on exploiting the corporate systems and seeking to continuously improve standard reports.


You will also need to be a strong communicator, be able to explain outputs to a variety of stakeholders at multiple levels of the organisation, and work with others across the TLB Finance Function to ensure provision of a high-quality and efficient service.


Typical responsibilities include but are not limited to:


Providing services as the Subject Matter Expert

Ensuring all business areas have adequate support, monitoring against the agreed service provision and checking that the boundaries of responsibilities are clear and being maintained. Understanding future requirements, anticipating, and planning for peaks in activity or changes in requirements, considering and adopting the appropriate mitigation, as required. Managing the provision of bespoke MI for the Finance Leadership team, Finance workforce and Budget Holders, where standard reports do not meet the requirements, ensuring delivery of prompt, accurate reports, that translate data into meaningful outputs. Building a team of super users and providing guidance on exploitation of the MOD corporate systems, working with Finance Operations to understand how best to utilise the current capability, maximise efficiency and provide a single version of the truth. Undertaking the management of:

o Providing advice, guidance, and production of MI to meet the business needs drawing on reliable data sources including relevant financial and non-financial information.


o Verifying information sources are reliable and if using various data or information sources to provide a single output ensuring that these are complementary and coherent.


o Production of bespoke reports or dashboards, ensuring this provides current information and where relevant outlines the point at which the information becomes redundant.


Stakeholder engagement and collaboration

Leading engagement with Strategic Head Office in the provision of information and where required preparing Finance. Managing the provision of information to the Finance workforce when changes are required to align to upgrades / alterations in the MOD corporate systems including nominating individuals to feed in at working level. Seeking alignment, where appropriate, to enable operating effectively and coherently with other organisations. Supporting planning to ensure that corporate system changes that impact your organisation are effectively integrated, taking an adopt not adapt approach, to maximise corporate system benefits. This includes identifying early interventions and ensuring changes are effectively managed and communicated to minimise the disruption. Building and maintaining effective working relationships with Finance Business Partners to enable an understanding of gaps in the standard reporting and identifying when a legitimate requirement for bespoke MI is apparent. Building effective working relationships with the other specialists within Strategic Head Office and other organisations. Overseeing the following engagement undertaken by your team:

o Providing instructions and guidance to the Finance Operations teams on their use of the systems, providing informal training when required.


o Optimising use of Strategic Head Office for advice, ensuring the use of available super user training.


Continuous improvement

Dedicating time to sharing best practice and lessons learnt, encouraging your team to collaborate across MOD to solve common issues, ensuring adherence to MOD standards. Seeking feedback on the services provided, testing, and evaluating their effectiveness, whilst assessing the level of effort to deliver against the benefit received. Continuously strive to improve the service provision, promptly addressing issues and ensuring that processes or ways of working are adapted, and customers are informed where there is an impact. Ensure misinterpretation of guidance is shared in a timely manner with team members to promote embedding any lesson(s) learnt. Managing the input and support to change programmes, where there is an impact to how your team will provide their services.

Person specification




Essential

An excellent leader and manager, who will empower their team to deliver whilst providing support and guidance to develop them, you will lead colleagues across Finance and the Service Directorates through significant change to ways of working, process re-engineering, automation, training and tooling. Significant Experience in a Finance environment with an ability to understand and interpret complex business and financial requirements and management information. A strong communicator, with the ability to discuss with various stakeholders, from finance and non-finance functions

Desirable

An understanding of how MOD / Strategic Command Strategic operates given the breadth and diversity and its highly delegated model. Experience of Agile Delivery and Scrum. An excellent ability to balance a range of competing priorities drawing on good judgement, initiative and able to coordinate the team accordingly. A self-starter capable of working independently from high-level strategic direction. Strong written and oral briefing skills. ###

Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and home-based working. This is a non-contractual arrangement where all office-based employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in office, subject to capacity and any required workplace adjustments.
