The String Zone is the UK's leading online orchestral string and accessory retailer. We are an online only business established for over 20 years. We're known for providing an excellent service offering good knowledgeable advice and we're used by many professionals in the orchestral world. In 2026 we will be launching a new industry leading website.
We're looking for someone to join our management team at our small, friendly and easy-going String Zone team. This is a full-time position based at our Lancing office, offering a competitive salary.
The Role:
This person will oversee the daily operations, marketing, customer experience, and strategic growth of an online retailer specialising in orchestral string instruments and accessories on the days the manager isn't working and work with the manager on the other days. The role requires a balance of musical understanding, e-commerce expertise, and business management skills to ensure the retailer maintains its reputation for quality, service, and authenticity.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Business & Operations Management
Oversee all aspects of online retail operations, including product listings, pricing, order fulfilment, logistics, goods inward and customer service.
Dealing with customer phone orders and enquiries.
Manage supplier relationships.
Monitor inventory and raising purchase orders as required, including drop shipments.
Manage customer approval scheme.
2. E-Commerce & Digital Marketing
Manage and optimise the company's website and online store (Shopify)
Assist in digital marketing campaigns across Google Ads, email, and social media.
In time assist in curating engaging content (blogs, videos, educational posts) targeting musicians, educators, and institutions.
3. Customer Experience & Community Building
Maintain the highest level of customer care and after-sales support.
Engage with orchestral players, teachers, and students to build brand loyalty.
4. Product & Brand Development
Expand and refine product lines based on customer feedback and market trends.
Assist in development of exclusive product offerings.
Ensure consistent brand presentation across all digital channels.
Actively check pricing to ensure we remain competitive.
5. Leadership & Team Management
Supervise fulfilment staff.
Skills & Qualifications:
Experience in an e-commerce business (preferably in music or niche retail).
Excellent customer service skills.
Strong understanding of orchestral string instruments and terminology.
Familiarity with SEO, PPC, social media marketing, and CRM tools.
Excellent communication, organisational, and analytical skills.
Desirable:
Background as a string player or experience in the musical instrument trade.
Experience with Shopify
