Overview
At FermionX, we're building a smarter, stronger manufacturing business -- where data drives progress and people shape the future of British industry.
As a Manufacturing Engineer, you will help lead that charge by turning data into actionable insights, driving process improvements that raise the bar for safety, quality, efficiency, and innovation. This role is critical to our mission of mastering efficiency through data and building a smarter, stronger manufacturing business.
You will be a key player in bridging the gap between product design and scaled production, enabling high-quality output through lean practices, continuous improvement, and collaboration across engineering, production and quality functions.
Key Responsibilities:
Respond promptly to any safety-related issues on the production floor, ensuring that near misses and incidents are technically investigated to identify root causes and implement robust corrective actions
Use production data and analytics to identify inefficiencies, drive root cause investigations, and implement improvements aligned with our data-led mission
Lead and implement continuous improvement initiatives that enhance safety, improve quality, reduce waste and increase throughput
Lead or contribute to VAVE (Value Analysis/Value Engineering) initiatives to identify cost-saving opportunities, enhance product functionality, and improve manufacturability without compromising quality
Collaborate with manufacturing and quality teams to deliver targeted training -- including toolkit talks and online courses -- aligned with IPC standards and aimed at upskilling production staff
Partner with design engineering (Internal & External) during NPI to ensure DFM/DFA principles are embedded early
Support commissioning and validation of new and existing equipment, tooling and jigs for production
Manage and control preventative maintenance programmes for critical process equipment and tooling, ensuring they deliver operational value and cost-effectiveness
Analyse production metrics (eg yield, downtime, takt time) to drive cost-saving and quality initiatives
Collaborate with the Quality team to analyse scrap and rework data, applying Lean tools such as A3 problem solving to develop targeted action plans addressing root causes
Participate in the supplier approval process by assessing existing suppliers' process capabilities, reviewing scope expansions, and evaluating new suppliers to ensure they meet FermionX quality and risk standards
Develop and maintain clear, standardised manufacturing documentation (SOP's, routings, work instructions)
Foster a culture of ownership and leadership at all levels by supporting and mentoring production teams
Ensure compliance with ISO9001, ISO13485, H&S, and manufacturing standards throughout all processes
Apply lean tools such as 5S, value stream mapping, Kaizen and standardised work to support strategic goals
Collaborate cross-functionally with supply chain & quality to deliver manufacturing excellence
Qualifications & Experience:
Essential:
Degree/HND or HNC in Production/Manufacturing Engineering or closely related discipline.
Proven experience in an electronics manufacturing environment, with knowledge of SMT, Conventional assembly, wiring and electro-mechanical assembly processes
Awareness of IPC standards including IPC-A-610, J-STD-001, and IPC/WHMA-A-620
Strong track record in identifying and delivering production process improvements
Highly proficient in reviewing and modifying BOMs and BOM structures through engineering change control (ECN)
Comfortable using ERP/MRP systems and proficient in Microsoft Excel for analysis of material and labour costs to drive efficiencies
Strong communication and interpersonal skills for effective collaboration with cross-functional teams, suppliers and customers
Demonstrated ability to work on multiple projects under pressure while maintaining quality and meeting deadlines
Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills, with the ability to assess complex situations and develop effective solutions
Experience in implementing lean manufacturing practices including 5S, Standard Work, Kaizen, Gemba, RCCA, and related tools.
Proven success implementing lean/CI projects with measurable results, including use of A3 problem solving methodology
Desirable :
Six Sigma certification (Green/Black Belt)
CAD/SolidWorks experience (for jig/tooling design)
Familiarity with IPC standards or regulated manufacturing environments
Experience in low/medium-volume, high-mix production settings
Behavioural Competencies:
Leadership:
Leads by example and sets clear expectations; supports the growth of others through coaching, knowledge-sharing, and collaboration.
Attention to Detail:
Maintains high standards for accuracy and quality in technical work, documentation, and production outputs, even under pressure.
Problem-Solving:
Applies structured problem-solving approaches (eg A3, RCCA) to identify root causes and deliver sustainable, practical solutions.
Organisation & Prioritisation:
Effectively manages time, tasks and competing priorities to maintain production flow and meet deadlines.
Communication:
Communicates clearly and respectfully across levels and functions, adapting style for operators, engineers, suppliers and leadership.
Accountability:
Owns outcomes with integrity; proactively identifies risks, tracks progress, and drives corrective action where needed.
Adaptability & Resilience:
Remains composed and solutions-focused in the face of evolving challenges, shifting priorities, or ambiguity.
Data-Literacy:
Comfortable using production data, dashboards, and reports to inform decisions and communicate findings.
Team Collaboration:
Builds trust and alignment across engineering, production, quality, and supply chain teams to drive continuous improvement.
