Marine Design Engineer (3 month contract)

We are currently undertaking significant capital projects including the re-building of workshops, new offices, and improving Southampton's last remaining working dry dock. Having secured a unique and exciting 36m new build project, we are now looking for an experienced Design Engineer to join our team for a three-month contract based at our site in Southampton.

Overview of the Job:



To assist with integration of marine systems and associated equipment into advanced un-crewed survey vessels. The role will focus on 3D modelling and 2D drafting, systems routing and CAD interoperability, ensuring that all designs comply with class & flag related standards and regulations. This position shall involve working closely with a multidisciplinary team, producing compartment layouts, machinery arrangements, manufacturing and installation information using OEM and partner supplied data.

Key Responsibilities:



3D Model & Systems Routing:



Development of 3D routing drawings and Information for key vessel systems including fire main, SW and FW cooling, wastewater, fuel, bilge, hydraulic and HVAC systems. Develop elements of the 3D ship model environment, ensuring that all mechanical, electrical, and structural components are integrated effectively. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop routing pathways, coordinating with internal and external teams. Ensure optimal integration of mechanical systems with other vessel components, coordinating with the fabrication and installation teams.

Design Management & Oversight:



Work within the company's design management process. Ensure compliance with design schedules, working closely with in-house teams and external partners to meet project milestones. Working closely with all engineering design and production teams to provide production drawings and system designs that are accurate and reflect project and client requirements.

CAD & Data Interoperability:



Ensure CAD interoperability across various software platforms for seamless data exchange between suppliers and project teams. Work within the company's revision control processes for CAD designs, ensuring smooth import/export of design data for system integration.

Quality Assurance & Compliance:



Provide functional support for issues related to QA/QC in the design and routing phases. Work closely with classification societies and other external stakeholders to ensure timely design approvals.

Problem Solving & Process Automation:



Use strong problem-solving skills to address complex design and integration issues, ensuring smooth project execution. Ad hoc Engineering and Machinery Design tasks.

Key Skills & Experience:



Experience in 3D model development and systems routing for marine vessels. Proficiency in 3D CAD systems, SolidWorks preferred. Experience in mechanical system integration and piping design, preferably within marine environments. Knowledge of class and flag authority compliance such as DNV, LR, MCA, IMO. Knowledge of FEA and production techniques including fabrication and machining. Experience with CAD management, revision control, and data inter-operability across different systems and suppliers. Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage complex projects and meet deadlines. Experience with MS Office skills. At least five years of marine/shipbuilding experience.

Contract length: 3 months

Pay: 35.00-45.00 per hour
