The Institute of Making is a unique organisation that explores, celebrates, and investigates materials and processes. About the role
In this dynamic role, the postholder will work with the rest of the Materials Library team to improve the usability of the collection and its user interfaces, making it more accessible and engaging for multidisciplinary staff and students at UCL. In particular, the post-holder will be tasked with researching, purchasing, and operating a small suite of user-friendly benchtop tools for materials exploration (including tools for imaging, testing and characterisation).
The post-holder will support the Head of Materials Library and Communications Manager to ensure that any scientific content in our public communications is accurate, accessible, and engaging. This may involve checking the accuracy of content from other areas of the Institute of Making, or researching the properties, processes, and uses of materials in our Materials Library collections and distilling complex multidisciplinary research papers into short, pithy, engaging stories, blog posts and social media content.
In addition, the post-holder will be expected to positively contribute to the friendly, welcoming, imaginative, and open-minded atmosphere of the Institute of Making
This role meets the eligibility requirements for a skilled worker certificate of sponsorship or a global talent visa under UK Visas and Immigration legislation. Therefore, UCL welcomes applications from international applicants who require a visa.
About you
The successful candidate will need to demonstrate the following criteria:

  • Excellent, in-depth understanding of the science of materials and a broad understanding of a range of manufacturing processes.
  • Experience of engaging audiences from different disciplinary backgrounds with the science of materials or manufacturing processes through talks, storytelling, demos, or hands-on activities.
  • Excellent research skills, with the ability to find, survey, understand and distil information about materials from a wide array of peer-reviewed, reliable, multi-disciplinary sources.
  • Ability to update and maintain digital catalogues, databases, and website content.
