Maths Lead (Specialist / SEN & Alternative Provision)
We are seeking to appoint a highly motivated, proactive, and experienced Maths Lead to join our growing trauma-informed provision. This is a subject leadership role for a Maths specialist who is passionate about raising standards, building confidence in numeracy, and developing high-quality, inclusive Maths provision for learners with SEN, SEMH needs, trauma histories, and disrupted education.
As Maths Lead, you will take responsibility for leading, developing, and championing Maths across your site, ensuring consistency, quality, and impact in teaching and learning for approximately 25-30 learners and associated staff. You will deliver high-quality Maths teaching up to GCSE and lead Functional Skills Maths, while supporting and guiding colleagues to deliver engaging, accessible Maths provision aligned with our curriculum and ethos.
This role is ideal for an experienced practitioner who thrives in a specialist or alternative provision setting and is confident combining classroom excellence with subject leadership.
About the Setting
We are a trauma-informed school with an attached alternative provision specialising in bespoke academic support delivered through 1:1 and very small group teaching. Our learners often present with complex SEN, SEMH needs, and behavioural challenges. Strong behaviour management, relational practice, and adaptability are essential.
Key Responsibilities
Subject Leadership - Maths
Lead and promote Maths across the site, ensuring high expectations, consistency, and quality of provision.
Develop and oversee Maths curriculum pathways, including GCSE and Functional Skills Maths.
Monitor progress, outcomes, and engagement in Maths, using data to inform improvement.
Model best practice in Maths teaching and support colleagues through coaching, guidance, and informal mentoring.
Contribute to curriculum development to ensure Maths is accessible, relevant, and motivating for all learners.
Teaching & Learning
Support whole-site planning to ensure all learners access an appropriate Maths curriculum bespoke to their needs and pathway.
Deliver high-quality Maths teaching up to GCSE level, including Functional Skills Maths.
Engage reluctant learners through practical, real-life, and trauma-informed approaches to numeracy.
Differentiate effectively to meet a wide range of SEN needs, including numeracy gaps, low confidence, anxiety around Maths, and disrupted learning histories.
Create bespoke learning pathways aligned with the school curriculum and individual learner needs.
Behaviour, Pastoral & Inclusion
Demonstrate exceptional behaviour management skills in line with the school's behaviour policy.
Build positive, trusting relationships with students using the ethos of "connection before correction."* Support learners' social, emotional, and mental health needs through trauma-informed strategies.
Work collaboratively with support staff to ensure consistency and effective classroom practice.
Teamwork & Professional Responsibilities
Work closely with the leadership team to support whole-site wellbeing, mental health, and academic progress.
Delegate appropriately to assistant staff and contribute to a strong team ethos.
Promote equality, diversity, and inclusion in all aspects of practice.
Adhere fully to the ethos, policies, and values of the school.
Person Specification
Essential
QTS or QTLS.
Minimum of 3 years' experience working with children or families with SEN, SEMH, or challenging behaviours.
Exceptional subject knowledge in Maths, including GCSE and Functional Skills.
Proven ability to manage behaviour confidently and calmly in a specialist setting.
Strong understanding of trauma-informed practice and the social and emotional needs of learners.
Excellent organisational and communication skills.
A strong commitment to safeguarding and the ability to respond confidently to safeguarding concerns.
Desirable
Experience of leading or developing a subject area.
Experience working in alternative provision or specialist education settings.
Passion for curriculum innovation, applied Maths, and personalised learning pathways.
