Job Description

An exciting opportunity exists in the Council's Transport Services for seven Mechanic Vehicle & Plant Craft Persons working from Newton Bar, Wakefield, moving to Featherstone in the near future.

What will be expected from me?



The postholder will be required to demonstrate that they have the following skills, knowledge and experience: -

To be an ambassador for the Council when dealing with all stakeholders, customers and have excellent communication and inter-personal skills. To deal with conflict situations. To be self-motivated and can motivate others. To have a good understanding of Health & Safety procedures. The ability to assess problems and provide practical solutions. To have the ability to prioritise conflicting demands. To display good numeracy and literacy skills. To have the ability to multi-task and display a flexible working approach.

What I might be doing?



This is a development role within the Transport Services Team. The grade will increase in line with knowledge, skills and experience as well as opportunity.

At entry

Level 1

the role will have well developed Fleet Maintenance experience and ability but not extensive, nor necessarily diverse (plant & vehicles) and will therefore require regular support from other team members and officers. Development will be gained through several different routes, for example by experience, supporting the delivery of varied pant & vehicle fleet maintenance, developing expertise and knowledge including learning from existing team members, specialist training, applying best practice and procedures (SOPS).

At

Level 2

the role will have responsibility for a significant workload with access to a line manager for guidance. However, the role will be autonomous and will require significant practical experience maintaining a wide range of vehicles & plant.

Purpose of role:



To support the Workshop Controllers to maintain the standards of road worthiness and mechanical safety for the Councils, Yorkshire Purchasing Organisation (YPO), Police and partners fleets and compliance of the legal undertakings of its Operators Licences, DVSA Guide to Maintaining Roadworthiness and Health & Safety Legislation; not limited to LOLER / PUWER Regulations etc. To maintain the Council's DVSA Earned Recognition standards accreditation. The economical and efficient repair and maintenance of a diverse range of Council owned and other, vehicle, plant, and equipment fleets. Including privately owned vehicles. To comply with statutory requirements regarding the safety and roadworthiness standards for vehicles, plant & machinery maintenance. Contribute to the delivery of the Corporate Climate Change Action Plan and enable Fleet Decarbonisation across all service areas on behalf of the Council.

Essential requirements:



Level 1



City and Guilds level 1 and 2 or NVQ level 2 in a motor vehicle engineering or equivalent trade. NVQ 2 Award in Electric/Hybrid Vehicle Awareness or equivalent. Demonstrable post apprentice experience in Large Goods Vehicle, Light Goods or Horticultural Machinery Maintenance. Category B Driving Licence. Completion of a manual handling / safe lifting training course. Currently working to or willing train to meet the requirements of level 2.

Level 2



NVQ level 3 in a motor vehicle engineering or equivalent trade. NVQ 3 Award in Electric/Hybrid Vehicle Routine Maintenance Activities or working towards. Category C LGV Driving Licence.
