Whippendell Marine specialise in the design and manufacture of electrical equipment for naval ships and submarines. Please note that because of the defence related nature of our business you will be required to undergo basic BPSS security clearance vetting and potentially SC as well as meeting special nationality rules.

Whippendell have been supplying the Royal Navy since the 1930's and can trace our origins back to the start of the twentieth century.

The company is currently expanding and winning contracts with existing and new customers and are entering an exciting phase in our development as we strive to achieve higher standards of excellence and exceed our customer's expectations.

We are looking for more mechanical design engineers to join our team and are interested in candidates with a range of capabilities, from recent graduates with just a few years' experience to seasoned veterans with full careers of knowledge to share.

Our mechanical team design complex packaging for electrical components. The work ranges from updates and modifications of existing solutions through to the design and development of complete, new systems to meet challenging technical constraints and demanding customer requirements.

Working closely with our electrical engineers and subject matter experts you will be responsible for designing electro-mechanical products, enclosures, cabinets and operator consoles, all of which need to be ruggedised to meet the demands of the harsh marine environments. You will need to develop elegant, novel and effective designs to overcome challenges with space, thermal management, shock, IP and vibration performance, EMC considerations and power distribution. Because of this, an understanding of and experience in electrical systems and rugged systems would be an advantage.

Also, working with our production and quality teams you will need to consider DFMA, fabrication costs and reliability, plus an understanding of sheet metal fabrication, welding and coating technology would be an advantage. Working with our Project Managers you will need to ensure delivery on schedule and assist with supporting documentation, validation and verification activities.

You will report to the Engineering and Operations Director and positions are full-time office based at our Milton Keynes facility although there will be scope for occasional remote working where project requirements permit.

Profile.



You must be excellent at communicating and be able to present internally and to customers as necessary. You should have plenty of common sense, an eye for detail, a good positive can-do attitude, be hands-on and self-starting and self-motivating. Effective time management and planning are essential skills.

Most importantly, you should be able to fully understand the full scope of a project and be able to contribute to all aspects, including:

assisting the customer in developing their requirements

realising a solution

overseeing prototypes and manufacture

submitting required documents

demonstrating compliance

managing testing as necessary

You will need to be flexible and adaptable and prepared to do whatever is asked of you and whatever it takes to get the job done.

Key Duties:



Working as part of a team to design and develop the mechanical aspects of enclosures, cabinets and consoles with particular emphasis on ruggedisation for harsh environments through the whole lifecycle (requirements, development, drawings, calculations, specifications, and reports). Ownership of some or all of the mechanical aspects of projects Provide technical support to project managers and customers. Develop and maintain mechanical drawings, parts lists and manufacturing data. Adhere to the design control activities within the company BMS. Assist with the production of ILS information, including manuals, maintenance procedures, spares provisioning and training materials. Review legacy equipment in respect of current standards, obsolescence, and design. Effectively manage your time, accurately logging time against tasks.

Key Skills and Experience:



Broadly experienced mechanical engineer with history in design and development of enclosures and cabinets an advantage.

Competent in the use of AutoCAD Inventor 3D and AutoCAD 2D

Must have an excellent understanding of sheet metal fabrication and manufacturing. Ability to create solutions from customer requirements, applying appropriate standards and regulations, selection of materials, manufacturing techniques and components. Experience in NASTRAN and other analysis tools, FEA, CFD etc. Competent in design to critical standard Qualified by experience or to degree level or equivalent. Excellent communicator at all levels and able to produce high quality technical documents and reports sometimes for inclusion in tender responses and submissions to customers.

Salary range 30k to 60k based on experience.
