Mechanical Design Engineer - Newcastle - up to 55K + Benefits
A key client of mine is currently hiring for a Mechanical Design Engineer in Newcastle.
They are an independent building services consultancy working across the built environment, delivering holistic design solutions that reduce energy use, lower carbon emissions, and support Net Zero Carbon goals in both new and existing buildings. The team of experienced chartered engineers provide expert advice and sustainable strategies, applying extensive knowledge of low-carbon design to create efficient, future-ready buildings.
Core Responsibilities
Deliver mechanical building services design: schematics, layouts, calculations, specifications, reports.
Undertake heat loss/gain calculations, pipework and ductwork sizing using design software (e.g. Hevacomp).
Develop mechanical design concepts with a focus on low energy, low carbon, natural ventilation, sustainability, and zero carbon.
Produce and check models, drawings, reports, and technical documentation; ensure compliance with QA, regulations, and standards.
Use digital tools/software for design analysis and optimisation (IES, Hevacomp, MEPworx, Revit, AutoCAD).
Monitor site installations and report to senior engineers/project leads.
Supervise, coordinate, and allocate resources within design teams; support cross-discipline collaboration.
Mentor and support junior engineers, providing technical guidance and training.
Represent the company in meetings with clients, contractors, and design teams.
Maintain awareness of regulatory changes, submission requirements, and health & safety obligations.
Required Experience & Expertise
Consultancy background in mechanical building services design (commercial, education, industrial, residential).
Knowledge of both design & build and traditional design processes.
Thermal modelling and compliance experience (Part L, TM54) using widely adopted software.
Strong understanding of design, operation, and commissioning of building services technologies.
Familiarity with AutoCAD, Revit (2D/3D) and CAD quality standards.
Site monitoring and handover experience.
Proven ability to lead design elements and manage small engineering teams (Senior role).
Qualifications
Degree (MEng, BEng, HND, or HNC) in Mechanical or Building Services Engineering (or equivalent).
* Chartered or actively working towards chartership (CIBSE or equivalent).
