Job Description

The post holder will provide a mechanical service to the Engineering Department and other directorates within Guy's and St. Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust (GSTT). They will demonstrate total commitment, versatility and flexibility whilst undertaking all tasks and delegated work as instructed by the engineering team.



Ability to organise and prioritise own workload where required and work unsupervised and independently.



The post holder will held to account for effective performance and will need to manage and balance competing priorities.



Carries out the responsibilities of an CP for:



Ventilation Systems



Responsible person duties for Legionella



Confined Spaces



When working on call have delegated responsibility for all Trust engineering assets



Works with complex workings of all mechanical/electrical building services plant and equipment located in NHS buildings.



Responsible for calibrating and maintaining highly specialist equipment associated with standby emergency generators and large industrial boiler plant, programmable logic controllers and other computerised building control systems



Install, service, test, diagnose and repair mechanical/electrical plant and equipment



Implements interruptions of engineering services in close liaison with both engineering and clinical managers



Carries out planned preventative and reactive maintenance on all of the Trust asset and engineering systems



The duty holder (authorised person) takes responsibility for the engineering services on site whilst on duty.



Deputises for the Team Manager in their absence



Responsible for the personnel management when deputising for the team manager



Effective management and co-ordination of all non-clinical services, within the Essentia Directorate is crucial to the Trust functioning effectively, economically and safely. The Engineering Department's management of engineering services plays a crucial contribution to this service provision. It demands a total professional approach and commitment from all Engineering staff. The role of the post holder within this crucial position is to carry out day to day maintenance of the engineering building services plant and equipment.

4.2 Management and Leadership



There is a regular responsibility for ongoing training and teaching of apprentices and trainees in their core subjects. i.e Electrical/Mechanical trade practices,. And other trade practices, and other staff specialism's, i. e decontamination, medical gases, welding etc.



Coach and mentor for other junior staff, ie apprentices and maintenance assistant



Financial Responsibility



Responsible for the installation, repair and maintenance of the building fabric, physical assets and machinery throughout the Trust



Accountability for appropriate use and allocation of stock issued.



Information Management



Make professional judgements involving a arrange of facts or situation, which require the analysis, interpretation and comparison of a range of options



Produces engineering plant reports using computer software, including the management and storage/retrieval of information and records



Reviews all capital schemes with respect to compliance and maintainability .



Communicates technical information with specialists and non-specialists.



Communicates technical issues to non-clinical staff in emergency situations



Communicates instructions, directs, mentors and guides junior staff to support their personal development



Works from technical specifications and drawings associated with building services plant and equipment



Interpret and works from instruction, drawings and specifications, drawings and specifications without supervision.



Carry out complicated analysis of test results to ascertain is the equipment meets its operating parameters during plant annual validations.



Ensure all policies complied with and knowledge translated to the staff and monitored effectively.



Implement revised or newly introduced operational procedures for plant and equipment.



Education and Professional Development



Undertake training as and when required to obtain, maintain and develop skills and knowledge base



Be able to learn and adapt to new techniques, embrace training and provide written and verbal instruction to staff and colleagues on all aspects or their work.

Staff may be asked to work reasonable additional hours (voluntary) and may be required to participate in an on-call rota (voluntary) which could necessitate them being asked to return to deal with emergency situations which could arise outside of normal working hours.



This post will be Trust wide and may involve working on either site.



Work independently when on-call throughout night and weekends. There is a requirement to act independently, deciding when to call independent contractors.

Post holders must maintain the confidentiality of information about patients, staff and other health service business in accordance with the Data Protection Act of 1998. Post holders must not, without prior permission, disclose any information regarding patients or staff. If any member of staff has communicated any such information to an unauthorised person those staff will be liable to dismissal. Moreover, the Data Protection Act 1998 also renders an individual liable for prosecution in the event of unauthorised disclosure of information.



Following the Freedom of Information Act (FOI) 2005, post holders must apply the Trust's FOI procedure if they receive a written request for information.



Information Governance



All staff must comply with information governance requirements. These includes statutory responsibilities (such as compliance with the Data Protection Act), following national guidance (such as the NHS Confidentiality Code of Practice) and compliance with local policies and procedures (such as the Trust's Confidentiality policy). Staff are responsible for any personal information (belonging to staff or patients) that they access and must ensure it is stored, processed and forwarded in a secure and appropriate manner.
