The role

As a Mechanical Engineering Designer, you'll have a role that's out of the ordinary. Working in a dynamic role across a range of projects within Submarine Support Engineering (SSE), you'll make a direct and visible impact on the UK's defence capability, helping to keep the Royal Navy operational, resilient, and mission-ready.





Day-to-day, you'll be delivering high-quality engineering design outputs primarily within the Waterfront and Design Team, supporting key defence and marine engineering projects.




Plan and produce design drawings and technical documentation to support engineering design projects. Develop design, safety, and implementation documentation for engineering solutions, ensuring delivery to required standards and deadlines. Provide guidance on selecting appropriate engineering methods, tools, and technologies for assigned tasks. Participate in design reviews to ensure alignment with design intent throughout the project lifecycle. Conduct platform validation surveys on board submarines to verify and maintain design integrity.




This role is full time, 35 hours per week and provides hybrid working arrangements with 2 days in the office/onsite and 3 days working from home.

Essential experience of the Mechanical Engineering Designer

Proven experience in a mechanical engineering environment Skilled in 2D and 3D CAD design, with the ability to produce and interpret technical drawings Strong understanding of mechanical installation and manufacturing requirements Competent in engineering drawing review and quality assurance Familiarity with welding processes and Non-Destructive Examination (NDE) techniques

Qualifications for the Mechanical Engineering Designer

Minimum ONC/HNC or Foundation Degree in a relevant engineering discipline, with proven knowledge of design deliverables and demonstrable experience in leading technical teams.

Security Clearance

The successful candidate must be a sole UK national who is able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role.
