Job Description

Engineering project work The postholder is required to contribute mechanical engineering expertise to current projects to support ORLAUs clinical services. The exact composition will depend on current service needs. Tasks will be delegated by the rehabilitation engineer, however the postholder is required to work independently in planning and delivering the work in a timely and efficient manner. The postholder will also need to work collaboratively with ORLAUs experienced engineering technicians and liaise with other members of the multi-disciplinary team, either through existing team meetings or dedicated project meetings.

Projects will include the following:

Designing of prototype measurement and assistive technologies (this will involve the use of specialist software such as 3D CAD/CAM packages and Matlab) Developing and adapting bespoke software to support ORLAUs engineering work and management processes. This will require fluency in coding in languages such as Python. Testing of prototype measurement and assistive technologies using specialist testing facilities in the ORLAU workshop. Introducing and commissioning new technologies.



Scoping potential new mechanical engineering components and systems. Identifying new suppliers for the rehabilitation engineering service, establishing contacts and making site visits independently as required. This will require the conducting of price negotiations and ensuring compliance with new supplier processes for the Trust and the quality management system. Clinical Service To attend multi-disciplinary clinic appointments, supporting clinical colleagues (consultants, doctors, physiotherapists and other allied healthcare professionals) in assessing and supplying assistive technology devices such as standing frames and walking devices.



To develop specifications for assistive technology, under the supervision of the rehabilitation engineer and senior technician. To manufacture, adapt and adjust assistive devices in the ORLAU workshop. To explain complex mechanical engineering concepts and constraints to technical and non-technical clinical staff, supporting the clinical team in technical conversations with patients and their families/carers. To provide technical support for ORLAUs offsite services, for example satellite clinics and contracted mobile gait analysis services.



Management To take responsibility for delegated project work, managing delivery of agreed goals. To assist in the training placements for clinical scientist trainees from other centres, supporting their design project work as required. To understand the governance processes associated with medical devices, conducting and reporting incidents when required. To take responsibility for key areas of rehabilitation engineering workshop management, for example maintenance, stock control, calibration scheduling, safe use of equipment.



Quality Management To learn the requirements of ISO 9001/13485 and the steps required to manufacture medical devices in line with current legislation and ORLAU policies and procedure. To develop and maintain technical files for medical devices, including the production of formal CAD models and drawings and the reporting of formal testing work. To assist the Quality Management Data Officer in the maintenance of ORLAUs QMS, for example by ensuring timely document control, reviewing and revising existing documents and assisting with the delivery of quality audits. To draft new QMS policies and procedures in line with engineering expertise.



To generate and maintain quality records in line with ISO 9001/13485. Education and training To maintain the in-depth knowledge of design and manufacturing methods, including developments in software and technical processes such as additive manufacturing. To maintain and develop knowledge of current legislation (ISO 9001/13485) to support the safe development of medical devices. To provide training for ORLAU staff in areas of expertise on an informal basis, for example through in-service training and regular knowledge sharing.



Research, Development and Audit To provide mechanical engineering support for existing research projects within the department. To lead on the development of new components/systems in the redesign of ORLAUs clinical devices.
