Job Description

A Mechanical Fitter is a skilled tradesperson responsible for the assembly, installation, maintenance, and repair of mechanical plant and machinery. This role involves working with complex equipment and systems, ensuring they operate efficiently and safely.

Key Responsibilities

Assembly and Installation:

Assemble, install, and commission new mechanical equipment and systems according to engineering drawings and specifications.

Maintenance and Repair:

Perform routine planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and respond to reactive breakdowns. Diagnose and repair faults on a wide range of mechanical equipment, including pumps, motors, gearboxes, pipework, and hydraulic/pneumatic systems.

Inspection and Testing:

Conduct inspections and diagnostic tests to identify issues and ensure machinery meets performance and safety standards.

Fabrication:

Use hand tools, power tools, and workshop machinery to fabricate and modify components as needed for repairs or new installations.

Documentation:

Maintain accurate records of all maintenance, repair, and inspection activities.

Health and Safety:

Adhere strictly to all health and safety regulations, company policies, and safe systems of work. Identify and report any unsafe conditions or practices.

Collaboration:

Work effectively as part of a team, coordinating with other engineers, electricians, and production staff to ensure operational efficiency.
Essential Skills and Qualifications

Technical Skills:

Strong mechanical knowledge and hands-on experience in a fitting or maintenance role. Proficiency in interpreting engineering drawings, schematics, and technical manuals.

Problem-Solving:

Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills to diagnose complex mechanical faults and implement effective solutions.

Dexterity and Physical Fitness:

Good hand-eye coordination and the physical ability to perform manual work, which may include lifting, bending, and working in confined spaces or at heights.

Communication:

Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, for liaising with colleagues and completing documentation.

Qualifications:

A relevant vocational qualification such as an

SVQ/NVQ Level 3 in a mechanical discipline

or a

time-served apprenticeship

is typically required.

Driving Licence:

A full UK driving licence may be necessary, especially for roles that involve travel to different sites.
Desirable Skills and Certifications

Experience with specific equipment (e.g., valves, pumps, heavy plant machinery). Certifications for working in specific environments, such as confined spaces or at heights. CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) card. Knowledge of health and safety regulations like CDM (Construction (Design and Management) Regulations).

Pay: 19,161.86-55,000.00 per year
