Job Summary



AFT Engineering Services is seeking an experienced Mechanical Fitter to join our team in Retford. This is a team leader position for a hands-on professional with over 10 years of experience in mechanical fitting and maintenance. The role involves on-site work across the UK, with some travel and overnight stays. From April to October, approximately 50% of work requires overnight stays (up to 10 days at a time). Outside of this period, most assignments are within one hour's travel from Sheffield. As a Mechanical Fitter, you'll carry out maintenance, repairs, servicing, and inspections across a variety of industrial sites--ensuring high standards of quality, reliability, and safety.

Key Responsibilities



Perform mechanical maintenance, repairs, and servicing on industrial equipment.

Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical faults efficiently.

Carry out routine inspections and planned maintenance.

Interpret technical drawings and specifications accurately.

Ensure compliance with all safety and quality standards.

Support and mentor junior team members.

Collaborate effectively with other fitters, engineers, and site teams.

Maintain tools and equipment in safe working order.

Essential Skills & Experience



Minimum 10 years' experience as a mechanical fitter.

Excellent mechanical knowledge with proven fault-finding ability.

Strong understanding of gearboxes, motors, bearings, and shafts.

Proficient in shaft alignment tools and mechanical assembly techniques.

Ability to work independently or as part of a team.

Commitment to safe working practices and high-quality workmanship.

Willingness to travel and work away from home as required.

Strong communication and teamwork skills.

Desirable Skills



MEWP (Mobile Vertical and/or Mobile Boom) certification.

Medium Risk Confined Space training.

First Aid certification.

Knowledge of lifting and rigging operations.

Qualifications



ECITB Safety Passport (or equivalent).

Formally trained Mechanical Fitter with NVQ Level 3 / HNC / HND qualification.

Pay & Hours



Rate: 18.50 rising to 25.00 per hour (depending on experience).

Hours: 40 hours per week (overtime paid at 1.5x and 2x rates).

Schedule



Workshop: 8-hour shift.

Site Work: 10 hours on-site + 2 hours travel.

Monday to Friday, with occasional weekend work.

25 days annual leave + 8 statutory bank holidays (33 total).

Additional Christmas break at the Managing Director's discretion.
