We look after the UK\xe2\x80\x99s communications \xe2\x80\x93 from phone and broadband, TV and radio to wireless airwaves and the postal service. Ofcom is also taking on new duties to make online services safer, by making sure firms tackle harmful content.

Purpose of the Role

Ofcom is looking for an experienced Media Manager to help explain how our work affects people up and down the country.

We\xe2\x80\x99re looking for an enthusiastic, experienced media communicator with a passion for news and a strong understanding of journalists\xe2\x80\x99 demands. The role will involve communicating some of our most high-profile, wide-ranging work. That might include enforcing standards in TV and radio, holding telecoms firms to account, or helping the UK to be at the cutting edge of new technology. With the Online Safety Act expected to give Ofcom new powers later this year, you might also get involved in our work to create a safer life online for children and adults in the UK.

You will need shrewd judgement and initiative to help Ofcom shape and influence opinions in the modern news environment. You\xe2\x80\x99ll also work with our Digital News Team to bring our story to life for the public, parliament, consumer groups and media.

Key responsibilities

Help to develop and enhance Ofcom\'s media profile by identifying opportunities and generating positive media coverage.

Manage enquiries from all sections of the media \xe2\x80\x93 often national print and broadcast, but also international, regional, online, specialist and trade.

Work with our Digital News Team to create engaging digital content for Ofcom\xe2\x80\x99s external audiences.

Skills, Knowledge and experience

Good understanding of the media and the requirements of journalists.

Strong appetite for media relations, together with a sharp news sense and the ability to identify positive consumer angles with media appeal.

Strong understanding of digital media, its relationship with traditional media and the opportunities and risks it presents.

Knowledge of the latest digital communications trends and techniques.

Analytical mind, able to cut through complex issues to see the wider picture.

Clear, calm communicator. Excellent writing skills, and the ability to convert complex policy into plain English.

Quick learner, flexible and enthusiastic about working across a range of communications issues.

An ability to identify with, and embody, Ofcom\'s values of excellence, agility, empowerment, collaboration and respect.

Qualifications

Strong experience in media relations, dealing with a variety of journalists and generating positive media coverage.

Experience of operating effectively in a complex environment working across multiple issues at any one time.

Comfortable managing reputational issues, developing communications plans and advising on communications issues.

Experience of planning and delivering activity for digital communications channels, including social media.
