At Sheffield Forgemasters we have an exciting opportunity for a Melt Shop Operative to join our team.


This role is based at our 64-acre site, sitting in the heart of Sheffield. Our Melt Shop department produces liquid steel up to 285 tonnes. The role will involve supporting our equipment used in the steel melting process, including installation, repairs and planned maintenance to plant and equipment.


As a Melt Shop Operative, you will work as part of a team to set ingot mould's ready for casting, stripping of ingots, teeming Operations and Crane Driving in a safe and effective manner.

What you'll be doing

Preparing ingot moulds for casting and stripping ingots. Apply the correct materials to the ingot, and ensure ingots are accurately identified and tagged during stripping. Ensure correct settings for specific moulds. Driving cranes, FLTs, and bucket trucks safely and effectively. Assisting with teeming operations and other pitside tasks. Slinging loads and carrying out pre-use equipment checks. Supporting primary and secondary steelmaking operations. Preparing and maintaining ladles for steel pouring. Maintaining a high standard of housekeeping and following all Health and Safety procedures.

About You

Experience in heavy engineering with a strong awareness of environmental impacts and a commitment to meeting required standards. Experience of an electric arc furnace. Crane driving licence and slinging experience is desirable. Strong attention to detail and communication skills. A willingness to take on physically demanding work and follow strict safety procedures. Ability to effectively manage daily and weekly team activity. Flexibility to work shifts, weekends, and unsociable hours when required. A positive attitude and a readiness to undertake further training (e.g. confined spaces, working at height, first aid).

The Working Pattern

This is a full-time role working an average of 40 hours per week, Monday - Friday on a two shift rotation.


Mornings: Monday - Wednesday 06:00- 18:00, Thursday- 06:00-14:00

Nights: Monday - Wednesday 18:00- 06:00
