Metal Design Engineer

Job Description

We are seeking a skilled and motivated Metal Design Engineer to join our client's team in Northern Ireland. This role involves developing innovative and practical metal design solutions for various structural and architectural applications, working closely with manufacturing, project, and client teams to deliver high-quality and cost-effective designs.
The ideal candidate will have experience with CAD software, knowledge of metal fabrication techniques, and a strong understanding of structural and mechanical principles. This is a hands-on engineering role where you will be responsible for seeing projects from concept through to completion.
Key Responsibilities:
Develop detailed 2D and 3D CAD models and drawings for metal components, assemblies, and systems
Work directly with the client and internal teams to understand project requirements and specifications
Create technical documentation including design calculations, BOMs, and fabrication drawings
Ensure compliance with relevant BS EN, ISO, and client-specific standards
Liaise with fabricators, suppliers, and other engineers to optimise design for manufacturability and cost
Participate in design reviews and propose value engineering solutions where applicable
Conduct site visits and field measurements when required
Support quality assurance processes and ensure technical accuracy throughout the design phase
Stay current with industry trends, materials, and technologies in metal design and fabrication
Requirements:
Degree or HNC/HND in Mechanical Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related discipline
Proven experience in metal design engineering, preferably in a manufacturing or fabrication environment
Proficiency in CAD software such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or Inventor
Understanding of sheet metal, structural steel, and fabrication processes (e.g., welding, cutting, forming)
Strong knowledge of materials and finishes used in metal design
Ability to interpret technical drawings, specifications, and standards
Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, especially in a client-facing role
Valid driving license (preferred for site visits)
Must be willing to apply for ECCTIS certification or take the UKVI IELTS exam if required for visa or professional recognition purposes
