is a specialist conservation company with an expanding project list. We work in a diverse sector, one day we may be called to work on sculpture, and the next on blacksmith-made handrails and traditional gates. To meet these demands, Hall Conservation Ltd employs a range of skilled people.
We are excited to be looking for an experienced
metalworker
to join our team.
The ideal candidate will have strong knowledge of workshop metalworking skills and the ability to overcome challenges brought about by working on old and heritage objects.
Skills:
General welding and fabrication
MIG, MMA, and gas welding; brazing and soldering would be beneficial but are not essential
Knowledge of or interest in blacksmithing. we operate a traditional forge with two power hammers and coke and gas forges along side a full fabrication workshop. This is often used for new bespoke projects but must be able to pivot to restoration and conservation depending on the project.
Desirable:
Knowledge of sheet metal work. Not the main focus, but always useful
Confident working from drawings and assisting others with understanding and planning workshop throughput
Use of AutoCAD; experience in producing drawings or, alternatively, working with draughtspeople to ensure accuracy and suitability of designs
Workshop management, organised and forward thinking to ensure smooth running of facilities and availability of consumables
Lead working-shaping lead sheet, lead burning, and leading in are all desirable skills
An interest in historic metalwork
Current CSCS card
UK driving licence
Site experience
Installation of metalwork
Slinging and object movement
The candidate may be asked to join project meetings as required to help plan and advise. Generally, we all try to help out, and the team is made up of practical people including skilled tradespeople, jewellers, blacksmiths, and conservators.
Our work does include on-site restoration, so site work experience is desirable, as is the willingness to split working time between the workshop and site. A large proportion of our work is in and around the Southeast (London), but some working away may be necessary depending on the project.
