You'll be leading the delivery of a varied portfolio of impactful projects, from digital tools to operational transformation. Based in the MGS Head Office team, you'll manage a small project support team and work closely with stakeholders across Defence. Your work will directly support national security outcomes, all while developing your own skills and professional experience.

Job description




The Ministry of Defence Guard Service (MGS) provides high quality security services at over 170 MOD sites across the United Kingdom. The MGS has guarded the Defence Estate for over 30 years including high profile locations such as MOD Main Building in London, Whitehall and His Majesty's Naval Bases at Portsmouth, Devonport, and the Clyde. We provide access control, military working dogs, control room operations and other security services. We play a vital role supporting the Defence Mission and work to protect the Defence estate and personnel from crime, terrorism, espionage, and sabotage threats.


The MGS has over 2,700 employees and is part of Army Standing Joint Command (SJC). MGS Security Officers are often the first point of contact for employees, visitors and contractors on sites and we pride ourselves on our professional, customer-focused culture. The role of the Project Manager is to lead/manage the delivery of MGS's project pipeline and a small projects team on a day-to-day basis.


The successful candidate will ensure projects are delivered on time, within scope and budget and to a high standard while managing stakeholder expectations and maintaining effective governance.


The role requires good planning, communication and leadership skills, along with a track record of delivering projects in a complex and multi-stakeholder environment.

Key responsibilities:




Lead and deliver a diverse range of projects from initiation to closure using recognised project management methodologies, ensuring objectives are clearly defined and achieved within agreed time, cost and quality constraints.


Build and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholder, including senior leaders, end-users, enabling/centralised service teams and suppliers.


Develop and manage project documentation to ensure effective governance and compliance, documenting key decisions and actions.


Provide regular updates and reports to project boards or steering groups and Assistant Head Projects.


Proactively monitor and manage risks, issues and dependencies escalating where appropriate.


Identify, quantify and track the realisation of benefits used to justify investment in the project.


Contribute to continuous improvement and lessons learned exercises to enhance future project delivery.


Responsible for covering a diverse range of activities to support the delivery of the Project/Programme objectives as required.


Undertake additional duties or corporate responsibilities as required, contributing to cross-cutting initiatives or wider organisational priorities in support of the Head Office function.


Provide line management, clear direction and support to project support role.


Operate with a high degree of autonomy, demonstrating initiative and self-direction to drive progress and overcome challenges with minimal supervision.

Essential:



Experience of managing and delivering a project and have knowledge of project management practices. Experience of managing multiple workstreams, risks and stakeholders. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, able to tailor communications to audience. Experience of delivering effectively through change and ambiguity. Competent in the use of common M365 applications (Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, Powerpoint etc.). Hold a full UK driving licence.

Desirable:



Experience of delivering digital or transformation/change projects at scale. Line management or team leadership experience.
