The role

As a Microsoft SQL Database Administrator, you\'ll have a role that\'s out of the ordinary. You will provide high-quality support and expertise for the operation of the Bristol-based IT data centres, specializing in maintaining Microsoft SQL databases and associated services for our high availability web hosted applications. You will work as part of a team to support monitoring, patching, deploying updates, and backups/restores for SQL databases and related services. In addition, you may occasionally cover other general infrastructure duties such as server build, network and firewall support, storage management, and backup/recovery tasks.

Key tasks

  • Specialize in maintaining high availability of SQL databases and associated SQL services for core hosted applications.
  • Support, maintain, secure, and patch/upgrade SQL databases and associated services/applications.
  • Perform routine and bespoke backups and restores of SQL databases to ensure data security and protection.
  • Manage SQL Server databases through lifecycle environments from development to customer production platforms.
  • Assist developers with queries, tuning, and schema refinement.
  • Monitor SQL DB/service health and performance to ensure high levels of performance, availability, and security.
  • Support core web applications, messaging services (Skype, Exchange), monitoring (e.g., Solarwinds), patching (e.g., WSUS, REPO, SCCM), and CITRIX and VMWARE desktops.
  • Provide instruction and support to less experienced IT colleagues.
  • Carry out tasks and procedures effectively and efficiently according to agreed levels of service or specific requirements of Service Level Agreements.
  • Respond to inquiries from management, specialists, or others, and address a range of problems, escalating those needing specialist or management attention.
  • Conduct investigations of operational problems, propose improvements, and participate in system performance reviews.
Essential experience of the Microsoft SQL Database Administrator:
  • Experience in supporting SQL databases and associated SQL services in a complex and demanding environment.
  • Knowledge of managing common infrastructure applications and services (e.g., Exchange, Skype, Solarwinds, SCCM).
  • Server hardware build, support, and upgrading.
  • General network/switch/firewall management and configuration.
  • VMware vSphere/ESX infrastructure support.
  • Windows server and clients.
  • Event log auditing and management of systems and applications.
The successful candidate must be able to achieve MOD SC Security clearance for this role.
