An exciting opportunity has arisen to join Shoreham Port's new Mooring Crew, locally known as "Hufflers''. Mooring operations are one of the important tasks that our marine colleagues perform on ship's deck as you will be responsible for securing ships to mooring bollards with the ships mooring lines. Shoreham Port is ideally situated on the south coast of England to offer support to vessels, owners, agents, and crews using one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world. Our Marine Team offer a range of maritime services to merchant and fishing vessels, as well as bed levelling, towage support and diving services.

Key skills and experience



A marine background is favourable. Knowledge of the Port Marine Safety Code. ENG1 medical certificate Enthusiasm. Team player. Driving License. VHF (GMDSS)

To safely and efficiently moor and unmoor vessels in the Prince Philip Lock and on the designated berth and support the wider Marine team.

Key tasks and responsibilities

To undertake mooring duties safely either on your own or as part of a team. Understand and adhere to the PLA (in full) Health and Safety policy including the use protective clothing and all other safety equipment necessary to undertake the duties of the role safely. As a front-line ambassador of the Port, it is essential you undertake all duties in a polite and professional way with all our stakeholders including vessels crew, contractors, third parties and the general public. Comfortable with working independently to achieve deadlines which are often time constrained. To understand all basic health and safety issues, as well as industry related practices, and to clearly be able to communicate these to other crew members so they can operate safely. Must be able to demonstrate awareness of potential dangers and hazards within a varied and changeable work environment. Other marine duties/tasks as directed. All operational hours/shifts as directed.
Key skills/Person specification

ENG 1 medical Driving licence VHF (GMDSS)
Desirable but not essential:

A marine background. Be able to demonstrate core competencies in seamanship and in a variety of work-related tasks applicable to the operation of harbour service launches and to be competent in a variety of work-related tasks whilst working afloat or ashore. Awareness in port operations.
Health & Safety - all home safe and well daily

Highlight unsafe behaviours and conditions to ensure we all go home safe and well daily. Follow the training and guidance provided and only undertake tasks you are competent to do. Ensure you understand the processes you are asked to follow. Ensure you understand how to use any equipment provided, how to store/maintain it and when to raise an issue with it. Actively participate in your team, making suggestions on how we can improve the way we work. Report all accidents and near misses so they can be investigated and acted upon
