Diamond Light Source is the UK\xe2\x80\x99s national synchrotron science facility. By accelerating electrons to near light-speed, Diamond generates brilliant beams of light from infra-red to X-rays which are used for academic and industry research and development across a range of scientific disciplines including structural biology, physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering, earth and environmental sciences.

About the Role

We now have an excellent opportunity for a Nano-metrology specialist to provide expert support in the state-of-the-art Precision Metrology Lab (PML), operated by the Optics & Metrology group (O&M) at Diamond.

The O&M group provide expert support in the design, development, testing, and optimisation of X-ray optical systems for Diamond\xe2\x80\x99s beamlines.

As a Nano-metrology specialist you will work in collaboration with a range of scientists, engineers, and technicians to measure, align, and optimise ultra-precision, micro- and nano-positioning stages.

You will operate computer-controlled instruments for measuring length, angles, and vibrations, including laser interferometers, contact probes, capacitive displacement sensors, autocollimators, inclinometers, and microscopes.

The O&M group have a strong history of publishing in scientific journals, and you would contribute to articles in the field of nano-metrology, as part of Research & Development projects.

About You

You should have a Masters degree in physics, engineering or another relevant discipline, or demonstrate significant equivalent experience.

You will also require:

  • Experience in the use of micro- and nano-positioning motion control stages.
  • Technical aptitude in operating computer-controlled measurement instruments. However, expert training will be provided to operate each measuring instrument in the PML.
  • Programming skills (using Python, MATLAB, or C++) to communicate with measurement instruments, and to analyse large and complicated datasets.
  • Methodical attitude to carefully record important details of scientific experiments.
  • Problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities for successful scientific and technical interactions.
  • Strong accountability, self-initiative, and a pro-active attitude.
