Job summary




The function of the Royal Marines School of Music (RMSoM) is to select, train and examine musicians and buglers of the highest quality in order to maintain musical excellence within the Royal Navy.


This role is to provide instruction, mark and set examinations in Elements, Harmony, Aural and History of Music in accordance with current assessment manuals. Additionally, act as level 4 associate professor for all level 4 Royal Marines Band Service degree programmes and to administer and deliver Defence Awarding Organisation (DAO) Validation. This role also is required to provide instruction, assessment and marking for all courses delivered through the Higher Training Department specifically in the areas of composition and arrangement, conducting and viva voce. Appropriate teaching skills are essential, and experience is highly desirable.


This position is advertised at 25 hours per week.

Job description




As Academic Professor of Music Initial Training, the purpose of the post is to design, teach and examine RMSoM trainees in Elements, Harmony, Aural and History of Music. Reviewing and updating course curriculum's, syllabuses, and delivery of all academic courses. Additionally, monitoring and reviewing academic aspects of DAO qualifications.


As level 4 associate professor for all Royal Marines Band Service level degree programmes, this role provides tutorial support, alongside the level 4 course leader and double marks all level 4 submissions. The role will also provide input into assessment and quality control issues at degree levels 4, 5 and 6.

Person specification




Technical (Essential):

Masters degree in music or Fellowship in music.

Technical (Desirable):

Higher degree in music commensurate with delivery of postgraduate courses. Professional performing / conducting diploma (minimum level: Licentiate, Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music).

Experience (Essential):


1. Experience of teaching at higher education level; to include significant time spent in academic course leadership.


2. Academic leadership, including course innovation and design.


3. Authoring documentation describing course rationale, detailed content, assessment criteria, grading schemes. This includes production of course texts at higher education level.


4. Teaching all of the following:

Harmony Theory of music Composition Arranging Music history Musical form and analysis Aural perception.

5. Assessment experience - including detailed written feedback - of all the above subjects together with performance, conducting and viva voce.


6. Extensive use of the piano in teaching; including sight-reading and orchestral score reading.


7. Extensive involvement in music performance to a professional level.


8. Conducting/coaching of ensembles.


9. Good IT skills, including detailed familiarity with current music software.


10. Implementation of Quality Assurance procedures within further/higher education programmes.

Qualifications




Masters degree in music or Fellowship in music.


Evidence of qualification will be required at interview.


All qualifications declared must be held at point of application and if applicable be in date. Equivalent Qualifications will not be accepted.

This vacancy is using Success Profiles , and will assess your Behaviours, Experience and Technical skills.
The sift will be conducted on the behaviours; Communicating and Influencing, Working Together, Managing a Quality Service and Changing and Improving alongside your CV, Job History, Qualifications and Personal Statement.


Personal Statement please include an overview of their musical experience both in performance and academic teaching scenarios. Also include an overview of locations and organisations that you have been affiliated with.

If called through for interview, the interview will be laid out in two distinct phases:




1. Firstly the practical and teaching element.


We would like you to deliver:

A 20 minute interactive lesson with our M3 students on one aspect, or a combination of, musical history, form, harmony or aural. A 10 minute lesson on a technical aspect of harmony which will be chosen by the panel on the day. (e.g. explanation of a German 6th). There will then be a short assessment of your keyboard skills by way of harmonisation of a given melody, an extract of orchestral score reading and then playing through a student exercise. For this last part there will also be an expectation to make comments on the students work. Finally, we would ask that you make an appraisal of a student composition which will be given to you on the day.

2. This will then be followed by a formal interview based on the behaviours the behaviours Communicating and Influencing, Working Together, Managing a Quality Service and Changing and Improving and on your CV.
