The Infrastructure and Networks Team design, deliver and support the core infrastructure and systems that enable End User Compute Services and line of business applications for over 100,000 Ministry of Justice users across over 800 locations. The Role: The Senior Network Engineer will work collaboratively with colleagues in the Infrastructure and Networks Team and build strong relationships with Service Owners, Information Security, Customer Service Operational Teams, Project Managers and other key stakeholders. You will:

  • Support and troubleshoot the end to end life cycle for core LAN/WAN and Networking infrastructure services that underpin an effective and efficient MoJ.
  • Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of automation tooling and DevOps ways of working to deliver reliable, effective and efficient infrastructure platforms that meet the evolving needs of the MoJ.
  • Work both with outsourced suppliers and MOJ’s internal infrastructure teams to ensure that services are delivered effectively and aligned with the infrastructure roadmap.
  • Provide technical expertise and escalation support for the frontline operational team where required, assisting in the resolution of faults and queries.
  • Produce documented root cause analysis for service incidents, working with problem management teams, manufacturers and vendors to identify remedial actions as necessary.
  • Perform proactive reviews of the current architecture and configuration to ensure best security practices and standards are applied at all times.
  • Contribute to the development and improvement of current operational processes and documentation or creation if they currently don’t exist.
  • Contribute to the review of both internal and external technology solutions to make informed recommendations for adoption, revision, and maintenance of required technology
  • Provide technical assurance to internal stakeholders and colleagues both through supporting the procurement activity and internal change process
  • Support with third party supplier management against contractual requirements
You’ll have: The ideal candidate will have significant demonstrable knowledge and experience across a wide range of networking solutions and technologies, you will have designed, implemented and supported infrastructure services to a user base in excess of 10,000 spread across a large number of sites. The key attributes we require include:
  • Proven ability to support enterprise-class multi-vendor network and communications solutions, with advanced knowledge and expertise across a wide range of switching and routing technologies including:
    • Wide Area Technologies – Internet, SD-WAN, MPLS
    • Network Routing / Switching - Cisco, Juniper, Aruba
    • Network Firewalls – Palo Alto, Fortinet, Cisco ASA
    • Wireless Technologies - Cisco Meraki, Juniper Mist, Aruba
    • Load Balancing - F5 BIG-IP
    • SIEM – SolarWinds, Splunk, GrayLog or Bluecoat Solera
  • Cloud Networking - Azure / AWS / GCP exposure is essential
  • Accreditation at “Expert” level in one or more of the disciplines (eg CCIE,
  • JNCIE, PCNSE, AWS Advanced Networking)
  • Demonstrable knowledge and experience of using automation and DevOps tools such as Ansible, Python, Terraform, Git, Concourse, Jenkins, or Azure DevOps
  • Recognise the benefits of infrastructure-as-code, “executable” design documents and using APIs and systems such as AWS Cloud Formation rather than manual steps, to achieve repeatable results from the start.
  • Excellent awareness of Network and Information Security best practice and significant experience of working with multiple stakeholders to design compliant solutions that balance the need for Security against business dynamism.
  • Able to inspire confidence in all customers, both internal and external.
  • Strong understanding of the need to maintain good records of system configuration and other associated documentation. Able to prepare such documents and champion their use and maintenance within the department.
  • Understands the need for, and follows both Information Security Policies, and Business Process, such as incident management, change and configuration management.
  • Strong commercial awareness and past experience of working on large scale procurement and in-life contract management activities.
  • Capability of original thinking, an enquiring mind with established analytic investigative skills. An ability to make judgements necessary to choose the best solutions to engineering problems
  • Excellent customer focused approach and commitment to service delivery
  • Experience with Package Management/Patch management tools and processes such as SCCM/Intune would be beneficial.
