We\'re looking for an exceptional, hands-on, multi-disciplined Networks Senior Infrastructure Engineer to help us make a difference to our planet.

Our Networks Senior Infrastructure Engineer will work a hybrid pattern of homeworking and 2-3 days per week in Exeter HQ. You can choose to work more frequently in our state-of-the-art office if you\'d prefer. As our Networks Senior Infrastructure Engineer, your starting salary will be \xc2\xa338,838. New joiners to the Met Office will start on the salary band minima. Our 2022-25 pay award means the salary will increase to \xc2\xa341,725 from 1st April 2024, and you will be able to progress towards \xc2\xa345,257 over time.

In addition you will be paid \xc2\xa36,000 per annum as a market supplement to reflect the demand for your skills. You will be paid this market driven allowance from April 2022 until March 2024 in your monthly pay whilst performing this role.

Your total reward package is potentially worth up to \xc2\xa359757.00 annually, which includes basic salary, market supplement, potential corporate bonus and employer pension contributions.

Job Purpose

The Network Services team is responsible for delivering a robust, performant and resilient Met Office network infrastructure.

We offer a wide range of network services including LAN, WAN, load balancing, security and web filtering.

The aims of our network team are to provide exceptional user experience, ensure services are more reliable, resilient, and secure, improve flexibility to respond to change and get better value for money. The services provided are essential to the continuing business success of the Met Office and include resolving a wide variety of technical networking issues that impact business continuity.

To achieve our goals, we foster a working environment and culture where our people can excel. We have an amazing team of circa 20 engineers, and you will serve as a key mentor and leader to continue the good work and build on top of this.

This technical lead role develops and maintains connectivity for systems and services on the local and wide-area networks at Exeter and Met Office remote sites as well as to our external customers and partners. Therefore, a background in the telecommunications industry with core network experience is desirable.

As our Networks Senior Infrastructure Engineer, you will be one of four technical leaders in the team with responsibilities for:
  • Providing technical leadership for the support and development of the networks infrastructure.
  • Agreement of customer requirements and plan, prioritise, and allocate work activity of specialist resources within the Network Services team such that customer expectations of the network service can be met.
  • Defining technical processes and procedures which lead to service improvement activities as agreed with the customer.
  • SME for technologies on key projects, ensuring technical solutions are secure, coherent and documented.
  • Promoting technical excellence within the team.
  • Line management and mentoring responsibility for team members, ensuring that performance and development issues are managed in accordance with Met Office values and policies.
Essential Qualifications, Skills & Abilities
  • A track record of supporting and developing operational networks infrastructure with an understanding of the underpinning elements required to successfully develop and run operational IT services.
  • Technically competent in advanced networking skills (CCNP or equivalent experience), and an excellent understanding of networking principles. You should have extensive knowledge of telecommunications, and WAN environments. You will have expert knowledge of telecoms access technologies and expert level experience on enterprise networking technologies WAN, LAN, Wi-Fi, VPN and Network Security.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills. Can communicate, influence and negotiate in a clear manner with people at all levels inside and outside the organisation.
  • Proven ability to manage team members and experience in providing technical and team leadership, including support for mentoring, upskilling and knowledge sharing.
  • Experience of effective decision making, with the ability to clearly explain how a decision has been reached. You must have the ability to understand and resolve technical disputes across varying levels of complexity and risk.
  • Knowledge of copper and fibre data cabling including specification, installation standards and techniques with a full understanding and awareness of network hardware installation specification and UK working practice.
Desirable Qualifications, Skills & Abilities

We operate an on-call roster in Technology to provide 24/ 7/ 365 support to respond to operational service requirements. This post may be part of an on-call roster and the postholder would be required to participate in an on-call roster where in operation.
