We are looking for a
Lock Controller
within our South Wales Marine Services team, based in Newport.
About the Role
This is a key operational role responsible for the safe and efficient coordination of vessel movements through the Newport dock lock system. You'll be working as part of a dedicated team to manage water levels, operate lock gates and sluices, and maintain clear communication with marine traffic and stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
Operate lock gates, sluices, and control systems
Monitor and regulate water levels for safe vessel transit
Communicate with vessel masters, pilots, and harbour staff via VHF radio
Maintain accurate records of vessel movements and lock operations
Conduct inspections and report faults or operational issues
Respond to emergencies and support marine operations as required
Monitor CCTV and ensure security of the lock area
Assist with training and mentoring of new staff
Contribute to continuous improvement and operational efficiency
What We're Looking For
Essential:
Confidence working in a dynamic marine environment
Strong communication skills and ability to provide responsible advice
Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
Competency in VHF radio operation
Ability to work independently and take initiative
Willingness to undergo and pass ABP medical assessment
Desirable:
Experience in port or harbour operations
VHF Radio Operator Certificate
Familiarity with Marine Safety Management systems
