Job Description


Nursing Standard is looking for an experienced News Editor to join our award-winning team.

We\'re looking for someone who can set the agenda with exclusive stories and build on the excellent engagement we have developed with our audience through our online content and social media channels.

You will be skilled in the use of content analytics to help measure the impact of stories and understand your audience, and have experience in the use of multimedia and social media to cover and promote news.

The overall aims of the role are:

1. Line manage news reporters.

- Line manage news reporters in accordance with RCNi policies and procedures.

-Decide on daily news content priorities and direct reporting staff and external contributors to carry out required work, according to deadlines.

-Ensure work meets deadlines and house style, and is accurate and legally sound.

- Encourage reporters to develop off-diary stories and other exclusive content.

- Recommend the use of freelances to provide cover when appropriate.

2. Under the direction of the Editor, Nursing Standard, ensure that news content is timely, interesting, accurate and relevant to its audience.

- Write and edit news content for Nursing Standard and RCNi\'s specialist journals.

- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of libel and copyright law and apply this in practice.

- Monitor potential sources of news stories, including other media, press releases, official reports, social media, other communications, and also competitor activity.

- Update specialist journal editors and other editorial staff about relevant news developments, typically via online morning huddle meeting.

- Maintain an up-to-date and comprehensive forward planning schedule, mixing \'live\' news with less time sensitive stories to maintain copy flow.

- Follow the editorial department\'s complaints policy at all times, and deal with complaints under the direction of the Nursing Standard Editor.

- Develop and maintain knowledge of publishing metrics that can be used for assessing relevancy of content and commissioning decisions including meeting regularly with the Head of Audience Engagement to discuss content performance and future ideas.

3. Work with the Head of Features in delivery of subscriber content

- Work with the Nursing Standard Editor and Head of Features in identifying subjects for news analysis, special investigations and subscriber content.

- Direct and manage RCNi reporters and freelance contributors in delivering analysis and investigations.

- Identify, commission and produce, in collaboration with the Head of Features, \'explainer\' pieces on topical items.

- Work with the Nursing Standard Editor and Head of Features to develop innovative ways to present content through use of multimedia and visual storytelling techniques.

4. Liaise with staff across all departments

- Liaising with the marketing department to ensure timely delivery of subject lines for daily e-alert

- Ensure production staff have a steady flow of news content throughout each day and liaise with senior sub-editors on breaking news items and negotiate copy flow deadlines

- Recommend innovative approaches to presenting news stories and news-led subscriber content by working with picture and design, and production teams.

- Approve the use of imagery in collaboration with the picture and design and production teams.

5. Promote RCNi externally through social media and similar platforms.

- Develop and maintain a significant professional personal profile on X (formerly Twitter) and similar channels.

-Uses social media to promote content from all RCNi products at every opportunity including posting and scheduling daily news content on Nursing Standard social media platforms and working with the Social Media Editorial Assistant to identify content for different platforms such as Instagram and TikTok reels. Flag relevant feedback on social media to Nursing Standard Editor and Head of Audience Engagement, and escalate negative feedback as matter of urgency to ensure timely response/action.

- Monitor competitor activity and liaise with the Nursing Standard Editor on whether and how to respond.

- Identify content suitable for press release and liaise with Nursing Standard Editor on this.
