Study Skills Tutor (SpLD)



Benefits

We have students with specific learning differences (SpLDs) including dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, ADHD and ASC, who require one to one support with their higher education studies. Tutors work with an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and act as facilitators to help students develop learning strategies that will improve their study skills and enable them to become independent learners.

Requirements

:

Experience in working with individuals with specific learning differences, ideally in higher or further education. Educated to degree level Welsh speaking desirable
This is a specialist role, therefore

you must hold a professional membership with one of the following professional bodies: PATOSS, BDA, ADSHE or Dyslexia Guild.



Applicants must be willing to meet with students on a face-to-face basis if this is a request for their support provision.

Specialist Study Skills Tutor (ASC)



Beacon Support Ltd. are recruiting for a Specialist One-to-One Study Skills Support Tutor (ASC) to work with Higher Education students. The position offers flexible hours to work around you, whilst helping to make a difference to students' educational experiences.

We have students with Autistic Spectrum Conditions, who require one to one support with their higher education studies. Tutors work with an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and act as facilitators to help students develop learning strategies that will improve their study skills and enable them to become independent learners. This specialist support addresses the issues which some students might have in acquiring, recalling and retaining information in written and spoken language as well as the range of memory, organisational, attention and numeracy difficulties that students with ASCs often face when working in an HE context

Requirements

:

Completion of National Autistic Society (NAS) online training modules, Autism and SPELL course, or relevant in-house and CPD accredited training Experience in working with individuals with specific learning differences, ideally in higher or further education. Educated to degree level
This is a specialist role, so applicants should have substantial experience of working with students with ASC on a 1 to 1 basis, also experience of working with these disabilities in an educational/learning environment and a good working knowledge of assistive technologies and related AT study skills strategies would be desirable.

An in-depth knowledge and understanding of autistic thinking and learning is needed.

An awareness of the strengths which students on the autism spectrum can bring to a learning situation and the skills to help students to make use of these strengths and overcome barriers to learning.

Beacon Support Ltd. are recruiting Specialist Mentors - Autism Spectrum Conditions (ASC) - to support Higher Education students.

We have students with disabilities/mental health conditions who require one to one support in their higher education studies. As a Specialist Mentor (ASC) you will assist students to learn coping strategies and techniques to overcome their particular disability-related difficulties. The type of support professional Specialist Mentors provide is highly specialised, which is reflected in the hourly rate usually awarded for this type of support.

A Specialist Mentor will encourage a student to build on their strengths and avoid negativity. The student will be introduced to appropriate interventions designed to develop their confidence and organisational skills. The Specialist Mentor will support the student in managing their workload and dealing with issues that impact upon study.

Specialist Mentors have excellent communication skills, organisational skills and flexibility to adapt to the changing needs of the students they are supporting. Any specialist support provided will be tailored to the student's individual needs, setting out clear goals and timescales. Specialist Mentors work with a Mentor Action Plan (MAP) to framework their sessions so that responsibilities and expectations can be negotiated appropriately. As each student's needs are different, sessions are tailored to suit specific individual requirements.

Requirements:

Ideally you will have experience of working with students in higher or further education.
This is a specialist role. To support students with Autism Spectrum Conditions you must also hold a degree, and have had comprehensive training in adult autism.

Your application should therefore outline training from the following:

Six National Autistic Society (NAS) online training modules

National Autistic Society (NAS) one-day face to face course in Autism and SPELL in Higher Education.

National Autistic Society (NAS) Autism and Girls on line course

In-house, or other accredited training, at an HE institution or elsewhere, and accredited to at least CPD level, which must include autism in HE as its lead subject.
