The salary for this role is

91,173 (inclusive of a Specialist Allowance)

Onsite working is expected for

3 days each week, however, we actively support requests for flexible working.


This role is based at the following site:

Culham, Oxfordshire

This role requires employees to

complete an online Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS)

, including The Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) checks for criminal convictions and possibly a search of open source data.

The Role

UKAEA are seeking an outstanding individual to be a Nuclear Integration and Technology Fellow. This role will provide nuclear integration expertise and scientific direction across UKAEA group's major programmes and exploit links with national and international stakeholders to ensure the delivery of major fusion engineering projects. As a globally acknowledged expert in nuclear integration, you will have a leading input to the strategy for nuclear analysis and benchmarking, working closely with the Applied Radiation Technology (ART) group who have decades of experience in leading the application and development of nuclear modelling software, nuclear diagnostics for neutron and gamma detection, analysis of nuclear data and benchmarking codes, and workflows through experiments. As a UKAEA Fellow you will be part of a cohort of acclaimed experts who will lead the scrutiny and challenge of UKAEA scientific and engineering programmes.

Key Accountabilities:

Technical Leadership and Integration

Lead and develop nuclear integration practices and procedures to enable delivery of major fusion engineering projects such as STEP. Ensure nuclear considerations that could impact schedule, cost, or safety are incorporated at all design and construction levels. Develop and integrate nuclear safety requirements into nuclear analysis and engineering workflows. Champion and exemplify ingenuity in developing novel engineering and scientific solutions within the unique constraints and emerging paradigms of nuclear fusion. Foster a culture of creative problem solving, enabling the team to overcome unprecedented technical barriers and deliver breakthroughs that demonstrable progress and industry goals.

Research and Innovation

Lead an internationally acclaimed programme of research and innovation in nuclear fusion technology domains. Produce major personal scientific output with demonstrable impact comparable to a leading university professor. Initiate and develop new experimental and research areas, including nuclear benchmarking experiments for fusion machine design.

Strategic Development and Capability Building

Promote and develop UKAEA's world-leading capabilities in nuclear integration and analysis, addressing capability gaps such as fluid activation and corrosion products. Design and communicate UKAEA nuclear research strategies, identifying unique selling points now and in the future. Scrutinise and advise senior management on UKAEA's scientific strategy as part of a cohort of senior experts.

Collaboration and Influence

Maintain and develop strong collaborations with UK universities, industry, and overseas institutions. Represent UKAEA on international panels as a nuclear fusion expert. Support UKAEA groups across activities for diverse customers, placing UKAEA at the forefront of nuclear fusion technology.

Qualifications

Essential Requirements:

Substantial experience of nuclear integration during the design and construction of high-power fusion devices. Substantial experience in the nuclear physics & technology spanning fusion and related areas such as, fission, spallation, accelerator and medical domains High international standing, recognised by invited talks, international prizes, visiting academic/professorships, or equivalent Proven ability to develop research programmes and long-term vision for the scientific research are An established and proven track record of excellent scientific research
