The post holder will work independently as an expert practitioner, exercising advanced clinical expertise, levels of judgement, discretion and decision making in the clinical area. The post holder will provide expert clinical skills and advice demonstrating a sound understanding of the issues related to the identification, assessment, diagnosis, treatment and management of the client group. The post holder will monitor and lead improvements to standards of care through supervision of practice, teaching and supporting professional colleagues and the provision of skilled professional leadership. As a member of the multi-disciplinary team (MDT) provide specialist advice on the management of patients as delegated by the consultant team. The post holder will lead the implementation of relevant research into practice contributing to the further development of the evidence base through research and audit. The post holder will contribute to clinical governance within the service by leading audit and research as part of the MDT within the area of expertise. The post holder will be an integral part of the training and education of other endoscopists.
Main duties of the job
Provide a nurse led endoscopy service, performing OGD's, flexible sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy, including independent diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy procedures
Be a highly experienced practitioner with expert knowledge and skills in the field of endoscopy services
To promote a high standard of care to ensure the best patient experience
Be responsible for undertaking clinical examination, a comprehensive clinical history, ordering relevant patient investigations and interpreting where appropriate and managing patient care within their professional competence
Be responsible for diagnosing and discussing the findings of such examinations with the patients and for planning appropriate management
Undertake all clinical correspondence for patients under own care
Demonstrate extended knowledge in obtaining informed consent in line with the Government, RCN, BSG and GMC Guidelines, providing the patient with advantages, risks and disadvantages and other diagnostic options
Undertake role as a Non Medical Prescriber, meeting all the trust and National requirements for safe practice. Administer and be accountable for the giving of sedation, recognising and reporting any adverse reactions and administering the appropriate reversals if required
Manage highly complex clinical situations for example recognising when patients are experiencing adverse reactions to the nurse led endoscopy procedure, such as cardiac or respiratory symptoms. Use skills and experience to intervene and correct complications during independent lists
Recognise when patients needs and risks are beyond own scope of practice and refer onto consultant colleagues
Plan and facilitate the effective discharge of patients following endoscopic procedures. Ensure patients are safely discharged into the community in accordance with unit protocols with any advice or information they require regarding follow up and post procedure care
Provide cross cover for other endoscopist to ensure adequate provision of endoscopy services
Support the education and training of other endoscopists within the trust
To be actively involved in developing endoscopy practice to enable the department to achieve local and national targets
To attend the Endoscopy User Group meetings
Undertake delegrated responsibilities from the Clinical Lead for Endoscopy
Work with the clinical team to ensure that review of the patient experience and patient feedback is addressed and informs developments to the service
To take part in clinical audit and present at the Endoscopy Audit Meetings
Lead change as required and ensure resolution of conflict
Contribute to the clinical governance process including adverse incident reporting/investigation and the management of complaints, as appropriate
Be involved in peer review of own practice and that of others
